Poplar Street, Petersburg Jones also advancing to semi-state Three Pike Central High School senior wrestlers – Silas Goff, Dylan Jones and Jake Sisk – are advancing to the semi-state tournament, which will be held on Saturday, Feb. 10, at the Ford Center in Evansville. During the regional tourna- ment held at Bloomington South on Saturday, Feb. 3, Goff and Sisk placed first in the 285 -pound and 220 -pound weight classes, re- spectively, while Jones placed second in the 126 -pound weight class. Goff, seeded second in the 285 -pound weight class, won his first match by pin – in 33 sec- onds – against seventh-seeded West Vigo senior Ethan Vivardi, then defeated sixth-seeded Bed- ford North Lawrence senior Da- vid Godsey by pin – in 2:51 – to ad- vance to the championship match against fourth-seeded Southridge junior Wyatt Kramer. Goff, who went to the ultimate tiebreaker to defeat Kramer 4-3 to win his first sectional title one week earlier at Huntingburg Me- morial Gym, emerged with a 7- 3 victory in the first tiebreaker. "Silas had been ill in the days leading into the regional, and I was a little worried about his stamina, but man did he erase all doubts," Pike Central head coach Billy Hewig said. "His first two matches, he dominated, winning both in less than a minute and 30 seconds total." The championship bout be- tween Silas and Kramer seemed to follow the script of their previ- ous meeting, when they battled to a 1-1 tie, resulting in a one-min- ute sudden-death overtime peri- od during which neither wrestler scored. During the first 30 -second tie- breaker period, Kramer chose to start in the down position, and quickly escaped to take a 2-1 lead. Both wrestlers were subse- quently assessed a one-point pen- alty for stalling, and Kramer took a 3-2 lead into the second 30 -sec- ond tiebreaker period. A fter earning one point with an escape to tie the score at 3- 3, Goff scored two points with a takedown and an additional two points for a near fall to win the bout. "Wyatt is an extremely talented defensive wrestler and it is hard to score against him," Hewig said. "But Silas was pushing the pace more than Wyatt was used to in the second overtime, and Silas hit a big trip to put him on his back. Silas stayed so composed and never got rattled." With the win, Goff improved to 37-2, while Kramer slipped to 33- 9. Four of Kramer's losses have been to Goff. Goff will be the No. 1 seed and will square off against 16th-seed- ed Madison senior Otto King (34-9) in the opening round of the semi-state tournament. The winner will then face the winner of a bout between eighth-seed- ed Evansville Mater Dei se- nior Roman Graves (25 -7) and ninth-seeded Whiteland senior Garrett Graves (34-6) in the quar- By Ed Cahill Press-Dispatch Sports Editor sports@pressdispatch.net A three-pointer by senior Demi Croak erased a one- point deficit with just under one minute remaining as the Pike Central High School girls' basketball team rallied for a 40 -36 victory over Wash- ington in the opening round of the sectional tournament at Princeton on Tuesday, Jan. 30. The postseason win was the first by the Lady Char- gers since a 55 -46 victory – also against Washington – in the opening round of the sectional tournament at Jas- per on Feb. 10, 2009, ending a stretch of nine straight post- season losses. It also avenged a 42-39 reg- ular season loss to the La- dy Hatchets – who ended the regular season ranked 16th in Class 3A – in early January. "It feels great," said an elat- ed Croak afterward. "Coach (Kyle) McCutchan, he's been saying all season that we've been working for this mo- ment right here. It's just great to know that we did it. We got a sectional win." "We knew we could do it," said McCutchan, whose team improved to 11-10. "I said, 'This is when you want to be playing your best basketball.' That might have been our best game. We weren't per- fect. We're never going to be perfect. But they rose to the occasion." "The kids just stepped up and made plays," McCutchan added. "It was awesome." Pike Central drew first blood as sophomore Jayln Nel- son scored – off of an assist by Croak – to take a 2-0 lead with seven minutes left in the first period. A fter a free throw by senior Hannah Shrieves and a bas- ket by junior Madalin Dant gave the Lady Hatchets a 3-2 lead, Pike Central scored five straight points – on a basket by senior Erika Hendrixson and a three-pointer by sophomore Lauren Vaughn – to surge ahead 7-3 with 3:04 remain- ing in the opening quarter. Back-to-back baskets by se- nior Sara Lewis pulled Wash- ington into a 7-7 tie early in the second period before three consecutive baskets by Nel- son, Vaughn and senior Brook Nalley gave the Lady Char- gers a 13-7 lead with 5:40 re- maining in the first half. By Ed Cahill Press-Dispatch Sports Editor sports@pressdispatch.net Pike Central High School junior Natalie Bohnert is returning to the state swim meet for the third straight year after placing first in the 200 -yard individual med- ley and the 100 -yard backstroke – while shattering her own school records in both events – during the section- al finals at Jasper on Saturday, Feb. 3. "I wasn't really thinking along the lines of records; I see it more like I have to get the best time," Natalie Bohnert said afterward. "I was very, very nervous. Re- ally nervous. I was almost as nervous as freshman year, which was really bad." A fter finishing first in the 200 -yard individual med- ley with a time of 2:17.58 during preliminaries on Thurs- day, Feb. 1, Natalie Bohnert placed first in the event with a time of 2:12.82 during the sectional finals, breaking her own school record time of 2:14.39 she posted while winning the event during the sectional finals one year earlier. Bedford North Lawrence junior Hayley Hatfield, who finished second with a time of 2:21.72 during prelimi- naries, placed second during the sectional finals with a time of 2:16.99. "In the individual medley, she came out and set the pace, got out in front and just really worked it hard," said Lady Chargers head coach Mike Bohnert, Natalie's fa- ther. "I knew I had to get out in the beginning and go as fast as I could," Natalie Bohnert said. "The breaststroke, I just kind of held my own, and then the freestyle, I start- ed to bring it back. But my legs were so dead after that." Then, after finishing first in the 100 -yard backstroke with a time of 1:00.30 during preliminaries, Natalie Bohnert placed first in the event with a time of 58.28 seconds during the sectional finals, breaking her own school record time of 59.04 seconds she posted while winning the event during the sectional finals one year earlier. Bedford North Lawrence junior Sidney Carlile, who finished third with a time of 1:03.70 during preliminar- ies, placed second with a time of 1:00.08 during the sec- tional finals.
