ALSO INSIDE SCREEN THE NEWS & ADVANCE 16 JA NU AR Y 13 - 19, 20 18 By Kyla Brewer TV Media T he early days of television were rife with detectives tracking down crooks and solving crimes, and such series are as popular today as they ever were. However, there's a new breed of TV drama that blurs the line between good and bad, and audiences can't seem to get enough. Viola Davis ("Fences," 2016) re- turns as prominent criminal defense attorney and law professor Annalise Keating in the midseason premiere of "How to Get Away With Murder," airing Thursday, Jan. 18, on ABC. When the series began, Keating and five of her law students became in- tertwined in a murder plot, and they have covered up various crimes over the years as a result. In season 4, a new mystery unfolds. Created and executive pro- duced by Peter Nowalk ("Grey's Anatomy"), "How to Get Away With Murder" hails from ShondaLand productions, the company founded by prolific, award-winning television producer and writer Shonda Rhimes Early on in its production, it was announced that "How to Get Away With Murder" would be a limited series, with only 15 or 16 episodes per season, in accordance with a deal with series star Davis. It should come as no surprise that producers were willing to make accommoda- tions for the Oscar winner, who's the only black actor to win the so-called Triple Crown of Acting, which in- cludes an Academy Award, an Emmy and a Tony . Annalise may be one of the lawbreakers, but Davis is almost universally loved in the role by critics and fans. Her work in "HTGAWM" has earned her a number of acco- lades, among them being the first black woman to win the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Dra- ma Series. She's also won two SAG Awards and an Image Award, along with numerous nominations. While Davis could carry the series on her own, she has a stellar cast supporting her, which makes "How to Get Away With Murder" all the better. Billy Brown co-stars as her love interest, Nate Lahey, a detective with the Philadelphia Police Depart- Stone," 2001) in season 3, Annalise's charges are portrayed by a number of the industry's brightest stars. Karla Souza portrays Wes's former lover historical film "Birth of a Nation" (2016) and feature films "Four" (2012) and "Reversion" (2015). along with the PBS period drama "Mercy Street." Matt McGorry rounds out the Keating 4 as Asher Millstone. A former competitive bodybuilder, McGorry is best known for his role as John Bennett in the acclaimed Netflix comedy-drama "Orange Is the New Black." He started out in the ABC daytime drama "One Life to Live" and later appeared in "Gos- sip Girl," "Person of Interest" and "Royal Pains." Fans are likely wondering what's become of the characters since the events of the thrilling midseason finale, which aired on Thursday, Nov. 18. When viewers last left Annalise and her cohorts, they were each dealing with the fallout of a tragedy. While Annalise tried desperately to revive the baby to which Laurel gave birth while stuck in an elevator, Laurel lay bleeding and her status is still unknown. Elsewhere, Michaela struggles to cover the group's tracks after Simon (Behzad Dabu, "The Chi") accidentally shoots himself in the head while confronting the oth- ers about their plan.
