B-2 Sports Wednesday, Januar y 3, 2018 The Press-Dispatch 1,000th career point – he sank the free throw to com- pete the three-point play. "I tried not to think about it too much and not have all that pressure, but scoring it on an and-one was pretty cool," said Nalley, a 6 -foot-5 forward. "And it was pretty cool that they stopped the game for me." Nalley joins Adam Seitz (1,943 points) and Gabe El- liott (1,138 points) in the program's 1,000 -point club. "I know it was something that he wanted to kind of be over with and for that stress and everything to be out of the way," Pike Central head coach Hunter Elliott said. "He deserves all the acco- lades and the credit for all that, and he's been a heck of a player for four years now. I think this year he's real- ly kind of dominating every game we play." "But he'd be the first to say he'd rather have gotten the win than the 1,000th point," Hunter Elliott added. "But the 1,000 points, that's a heck of an accomplish- ment. He's the third player in school history to do it, so it's something that can't be taken lightly." Since his freshman sea- son, Nalley has averaged 11.9 points in 85 career games. "Playing freshman year, I didn't really think about ac- tually scoring 1,000 or none of that," said Nalley, who is averaging 22.2 points per game this season. "I was a freshman. I just wanted to get out there and compete and actually play." "Then, in my junior year, I was, like, 'Wow,'" Nalley added. "It just kind of hit me that I may if I just kept aver- aging what I had been." Nalley, who was named to the Pocket Athletic Confer- ence's All-Conference Team as a junior, is the 18 -year-old son of Ryan and Nikki Nal- ley, who currently reside in Otwell. During the first half, Pike Central made just six of 20 field goal attempts, including zero of six tries from beyond the three- point arc. "We knew what they were going to do," Mc- Cutchan said. "We scout- ed them enough to know they were going to go to a 2-3 zone. Honestly, we had a game plan, and I thought we did it pretty well. We just missed some open shots tonight. We tried to force a few things early, but the first quarter, we didn't hit anything." A fter a basket by senior Brook Nalley pulled the La- dy Chargers to within 21- 17 at the start of the sec- ond half, an exchange of three-pointers – the first by Moody answered by one from Pike Central soph- omore Lauren Vaughn – kept Washington's lead at four points, at 24-20, with 6:37 left in the third period. The Lady Hatchets ex- tended their lead to 26 -20 on a field goal by junior Maddie Dant with 5:18 re- maining in the quarter be- fore the Lady Chargers scored five straight points – on a basket by Nalley and a three-pointer by senior Demi Croak – to close to within 26 -25 with 3:52 left in the period. A fter a basket by Dent extended Washington's lead to 28 -25, a three-point- er by Vaughn tied the score at 28 -28 with 3:08 remain- ing in the third quarter. However, Washington scored four straight points – on back-to-back baskets by Shrieves – to take a 32- 28 lead. Following a basket by Nelson, a three-point play by Lewis extended the Lady Hatchets' lead to 35 -30. Pike Central would close to within one point twice – at 35 -34 with 7:36 left in the fourth quarter and 37-36 with 6:09 remaining – be- fore a free throw and a bas- ket by Moody and a basket by Lewis extended Wash- ington's lead to 42-36 lead with 24 seconds left in the fourth period. During that span, the La- dy Chargers were 0 -for-9 from the floor – includ- ing 0 -for-4 from beyond the three-point arc – and 0 -for-2 from the free throw line while turning the ball over twice. A pair of offensive re- bounds on Pike Central's final possession led to a three-pointer by Nelson at the buzzer to narrow Wash- ington's margin of victory to three points. "We had our chances," McCutchan said. "They're a quality ballclub. They packed it in, forced us to shoot some jump shots, and we missed them. We took a couple that were not very good shots, and we forced a few late, but we also got a lot of good ones that just didn't fall." "We hit two more jump shots, we go home happy, it's a different story," Mc- Cutchan added. "That's part of it. I give them cred- it. They made the plays down the stretch they had to." Nelson came off the bench to lead Pike Central (8 -6) in scoring, hitting six of seven field goal attempts and one of four tries from the free throw line while scoring 14 points. Hen- drixson added 10 points while grabbing a game- high 10 rebounds. Nalley, who had a game-high five steals, and Vaughn tallied six points each. Croak net- ted three points while dish- ing out five assists. For the game, the Lady Chargers made 16 of 48 field goal attempts – a 33.3 percent average – and hit three of nine tries from the free throw line while turn- ing the ball over 10 times. Moody added 11 points for the Lady Hatchets (11-3) while also dishing out five assists. Shrieves, who scored 24 points and grabbed seven rebounds in a 58 -43 win over Pike Cen- tral as a junior, finished with eight points and a team-high six rebounds. For the game, Washing- ton made 18 of 34 field goal attempts – a 52.9 percent average – and hit three of five tries from the free throw line while turning the ball over 16 times. From beyond the three-piont line, Washing- ton was 2-for-10 while Pike Central made five out of 19 attempts. "We ran our game plan pretty well," McCutchan said. "We just didn't hit shots. We just missed too many. Maybe we shot too many jump shots, and may- be I could have subbed more, but I went with my athletic lineup because we were always down." "We gave ourselves a chance," McCutchan add- ed. "We didn't get the job done, but if we give our- selves a chance to win ev- ery game, we'll be fine. It was just one of those games that could have gone either way and, unfortunately, it didn't go our way. We've got to learn to win those tight games against a good opponent, but we're getting closer and it's fun. It's fun when you're starting to re- ally compete." In the junior varsity con- test, freshman Jade Brown- ing scored a game-high 12 points to lead Washington to a 48 -34 victory over Pike Central. Sophomores Mel- ida Ajradinoska and Quin- cee Healy added 11 points and 10 points, respective- ly, for the Lady Hatch- ets. Junior Kenzie Powell paced the Lady Chargers with 10 points while fresh- men Mallory Hickey and Gracie Jones added eight points each. SOMETHING NEWSWORTHY?
