A fter senior Nick Hillyard hit a pair of free throws to pull Pike Central to within 24-19 with 3:40 remaining in the first half, Wood Memo- rial scored 11 unanswered points – six by Bartley, five by Falls – to open up a 35 - 19 lead with 5:44 left in the third period. During that stretch, the Chargers were 0 -for-6 from the field – including 0 -for-4 from beyond the three point arc – and turned the ball over three times. "It was one of those things where they made the plays when they needed to and, when we got opportunities, we just came up a little bit short," Elliott said. A basket and a three-point- er by Booker cut the deficit to 35 -24, but a pair of free throws by Bartley and a bas- ket by Falls stretched the Trojans lead to 39 -24 with 3:40 remaining in the third quarter. A 7-3 scoring run – on a three-pointer by senior Kyson Western and a free throw and a three-point play by Nalley – pulled the Char- gers to within 42-31. Trailing 51-38 in the fourth period, Pike Central cut Wood Memorial's lead to 51-41 on a three-pointer by Booker with 5:23 remaining. A fter Nalley hit a pair of free throws to answer a bas- ket by Nurrenbern, a three- point play by Nurrenbern stretched Wood Memorial's lead to 56 -43 with 3:22 left. A three-pointer by Nal- ley with just under a minute remaining pulled the Char- gers to within 58 -50 with just under one minute re- maining in the fourth peri- od before the Trojans scored the game's final five points on two free throws by Bart- ley, one free throw by senior Remington Wilkison and a basket by Saulmon. Nalley paced Pike Central (3-6) with a game-high 25 points while also leading the Chargers in rebounds (six) and steals (three), while Booker added 16 points. Western, who dished out a game-high five assists, net- ted three points and Clar- idge and Tormohlen tallied two points each to round out the scoring for Pike Central. "Bryant's been consistent all year," Elliott said. "He's been very dominant for the most part, and he's drawing a lot of attention, so that's giving some other players some really good looks, and we're just really not con- verting on those right now. We're just going to have to have some kids step up." However, according to Chargers' head coach Billy Hewig, a loss by sophomore Blake Henson – by an 11-6 decision to Wildcats senior Landon Betz – at 138 pounds proved key to Pike Central's victory. "We had a couple of wres- tlers out with injury and had to sub in some back-up wrestlers and move some around," Hewig said. "Blake had to bump up a weight class to fill in and was giving up 10 pounds. He went out and wrestled a tough match against a good wrestler. Not giving up a pin and keeping the match close was huge. It saved us three team points. That proved to be the differ- ence in the match." "All the wins were big for us," Hewig added, "but that was definitely a highlight." The Chargers jumped out to a 22-6 lead – on a win by forfeit by freshman Lane Potts at 106 pounds, wins by pins by freshman Lane Mill- er at 120 pounds and senior Dylan Jones at 126 pounds and a win by major decision by junior Randy Powell at 132 pounds – before Betz's win by decision launched a 27-0 scoring run to give Jas- per a 33-22 lead. However, a win by pin by senior Christian Alvey at 195 pounds and a win by tech fall by senior Jake Sisk at 220 pounds pulled the Chargers even at 33-33 be- fore Goff's win by decision at 285 pounds decided the match. "Lane Miller, Dylan Jones and Christian Alvey came up with some huge pins that set us up really well," said Hewig, whose team im- proved to 15 -3. Following are the bout-by- bout results: • At 106 pounds, Char- gers freshman Lane Potts won by forfeit. • At 113 pounds, Char- gers sophomore Dalton Wil- liams lost by pin to Jasper sophomore Cameron Eck- stein in 3:24. • At 120 pounds, Char- gers freshman won by pin over Jasper freshman Re- ece Fromme in 1:40. • At 126 pounds, Char- gers senior Dylan Jones won by pin over Jasper soph- omore Chase Mehringer in 3:32. • At 132 pounds, Char- gers junior Randy Powell won by a 17-3 major decision over Jasper sophomore Kole Terwiske. • At 138 pounds, Char- gers sophomore Blake Hen- son lost by an 11-6 decision to Jasper junior Landon Betz. • At 145 pounds, Char- gers sophomore Brandon Goeppner lost by pin to Jas- per sophomore Sam Bies in 1:59. • At 152 pounds, Char- gers sophojmore Jagger Gladish lost by pin to Jasper senior Noah Heim in 1:22. • At 160 pounds, Char- gers sophomore Ian Allen lost by an 8 -4 decision to Jas- per senior Quinton Gordon. • At 170 pounds, Char- gers senior Gavin Boyd lost by a 7-2 decision to Jasper ju- nior Zach Flynn. • At 182 pounds, Jasper junior Zach Weisheit won by forfeit. • At 195 pounds, Char- gers senior Christian Alvey won by pin over Jasper ju- nior Zach Rydberg in 2:59. • At 220 pounds, Char- gers senior Jake Sisk won by tech fall by a score of 18 - 2 over Jasper junior Jimmy Earley. • At 285 pounds, Char- gers senior Silas Goff won by a 3-1 decision over Jas- per freshman Quade Popp. ponent."
