I
t wasn't long ago that histori-
cal period dramas would elicit
a collective groan from hip TV
viewers, but things are chang-
ing. Thanks to some innovative, if
not completely factual, storytell-
ing, programs with an historical
bent are on the rise. Suddenly,
history is cool, at least in prime
time.
Brave knights embark on a
mission to save and protect ven-
erated Christian relics in History
Channel's new 10-episode series
"Knightfall," airing Wednesday,
Dec. 13. Inspired by the true story
of the Knights Templar, a Catholic
military order of warrior monks
founded in 1119, the new series
hails from author Richard Rayner
and director Don Handfield
("Touchback," 2012), and lists
Jeremy Renner ("Thor," 2011) as
an executive producer.
While the show traces the sto-
ry of the famed knights, it's im-
portant to note that the History
Channel series is a fictional take
on what went down. When the
series debuted Wednesday, Dec.
6, the Knights Templar tried to
hang onto their last stronghold in
the city of Acre and failed, losing
the Holy Grail in the process.
Years later, a clue to the location
of the Grail sparks courageous
Templar Knight Landry, played by
Tom Cullen ("Weekend," 2011),
to spur his brothers into action to
recover the Cup of Christ.
Such a quest is not for the
meek, but the Knights Templar,
veterans of the Crusades, are em-
boldened by their strong faith
and sense of purpose. Dressed in
their trademark white mantles
with red crosses, they were
among the most skilled fighting
forces of their day. In an interview
with the Hollywood Reporter this
spring, English historian Dan
Jones, who served as a consultant
for the History Channel series, de-
scribed the Knights Templar as
"the Navy SEALs of their day."
The role as a Knight Templar
will be a new challenge for Cul-
len, who may be more recogniz-
able to TV fans as Viscount
Gillingham from "Downton Ab-
bey." He's established himself as
a true chameleon since his break-
out role in the 2011 film "Week-
end," in which he played a life-
guard. The part earned him a Brit-
ish Independent Film Award for
Most Promising Newcomer,
among other accolades. Across
the pond, he's also well known as
the lead in the Sky 1 mystery se-
ries "The Five."
By the time viewers catch up
with Landry in the Dec. 13 episode,
