26 TEHAMA - THE MAGAZINE, October 2017 trail access points along Hwy 89 if you have a shorter round trip ride in mind. Biking the trail is well worth even a day-trip from Tehama County, with either breakfast before or dinner after in Chester. The little town of Chester at the north end of the lake is well positioned to provide your camping supply needs, or a good meal. It's about 3 miles further east on Hwy 36 beyond the turnoff on Hwy 89. We always forget something, or run out of something on night #2 or 3, so we are always glad Chester is there. The town itself is a little ragged -- it's no Tahoe City, but has its own funky charm. You can buy campsite firewood cheaper than from your camp host at a rock-gravel outfit on the north side of Hwy 36 before you drive into Chester proper. Big plywood sign saying "FIREWOOD" in red spray paint will be your clue. If they're closed or whatever, well-stocked Holiday Market on the south side of Hwy 36 about halfway through town usually has some. Holiday is a very well stocked market for a grocery store in an isolated mountain town. For breakfast or lunch, our favorite (and highest rated on Yelp) is Cravings, 278 Main street, open 7 am- 2 pm. Three other well-rated Chester restaurants are The Ranch House, the Burger Depot and Happy Garden Chinese. Check them out on Yelp. For sporting goods, there are two stores across the street from one another at the east end of Chester on Hwy 36, The Sports Nut and Ayoob Ace Hardware. We have not yet experienced Lake Almanor in the winter, but we plan to give it a visit in the upcoming season. The Plumas County tourism website has cross country skiing and snowshoeing information on the Outdoor Recreation tab at plumascounty.org. We'll be leaving the pups at home and reserving a condo or lodge room with a fireplace, for sure. Call for hours & reservations (530) 527-2720 www.lariatbowl.com 365 S.
