See us for all your car care needs! • Sales • Service • Tires • Sales • Service • Tires Group to Start Effort to Eliminate Invasive Plants near Cedarburg Bog SAUKVILLE — A new effort to stop or eliminate the spread of invasive plants along roadways near the Cedarburg Bog has been announced. The Friends of the Cedarburg Bog have begun a Bog Guardian Program aimed at training local volunteers to monitor, locate and at times eradicate invasive plants. "Roads that we drive each day to get us to work, school, and everywhere are also a primary avenue for the invasion of unwanted plants," said Jamie Sue Beaupré, FOCB Bog Guardian Program manager. "Not only are some of these plants a threat to our yards, gardens and woodlands, some can cause harmful effects to humans." The Cedarburg Bog Is located in Ozaukee County and is one of the largest and least disturbed wetlands remaining in Southeast Wisconsin. The Cedarburg Bog State Natural Area covers more than 1,800 acres bordered by Highway 33 on the north and Cedar Sauk Road on the south. More information can be found at Bogfriends.org. Beaupré said one of the most menacing of these plants is wild parsnip. If it comes in contact with the skin, the plant juices when activated by sunlight can cause painful blistering burns that result in scarring. Once established, invasive plants are difficult and expensive to eradicate. "We are very fortunate that Wild parsnip, teasel, Japanese knotweed, phragmites and others are not yet abundant in our area, and there is still a chance to stop them before they spread," Beaupré said. In addition to contacting local road and highway departments, Beaupré is currently looking for local landowners and volunteers to help with this effort. The goal is to make the Bog Guardian program sustainable and to keep these invasive plants from ever becoming established in the Cedarburg Bog area. The Bog Guardian Program is funded by the Ozaukee Washington Land Trust, WI-DNR Citizen-based Monitoring Network, the UWM Field Station and by the Friends of the Cedarburg Bog. Beaupré urges anyone interested in helping with the program to contact her at jamiebeaupre@bogfriends. org or call 262-323-1887.
