While re- tail seems a mere stepping stone on the path to a "real" career to some, the vast majority of North Americans earn their living in this sector, front-facing and adjusting signage to ensure the lowest price is extremely visible to pro- spective customers. It's no sur- prise, then, that a series like "Su- perstore" has been such a hit, given its honest portrayal of the day-to-day amusements of such a work environment. A new epi- sode airs Thursday, Oct. 19, on NBC. The series launched back in 2015, inviting viewers into the busy aisles of Cloud 9 store num- ber 1217. Floor supervisor Amy Dubanowski (America Ferrera, "Ugly Betty") is quick to school newcomer Jonah Sims (Ben Feld- man, "Cloverfield," 2008) on the repetitive, mundane nature of working in a big box store. Armed with sarcasm and a sharp wit, Amy captivates Jonah, though he struggles to find his admiration reciprocated. Where he does find fast friend- ship is with Garrett McNeill (Col- ton Dunn, "Key and Peele"), whose love of pranks and witty announcements help both of them to navigate the humdrum of routine. The cast is rounded out by memorable, quirky characters — notably, fan favorites Chey- enne (Nichole Bloom, "Teenage Cocktail," 2016), Mateo (Nico Santos, "Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2," 2015) and Dina (Lauren Ash, "Su- per Fun Night"). Managing the superstore is the task of Glenn St- urgis, played by "The Kids in the Hall" alum Mark McKinney, whose years of experience in sketch and improv comedy truly lend to the authentic feel of Cloud 9. Last season's finale saw the status of multiple relationships coming to a head, thanks to the threat of an impending tornado. What should have been just an- other boring day on the sales floor was doubly troubled, first by the threat of six layoffs — which Glenn let slip at Cheyenne's wed- ding — then by a tornado warn- ing that is fully realized, wreaking devastation on the shop. The piv- otal moment, however, was a brief, passionate kiss between Jo- nah and Amy, both caught up in a moment of near death and find- ing a way to express the emo- Feature this week
