4 A U S T I N W A Y L A T E F A L L 2 0 1 7 | M O D E R N L U X U R Y . C O M I moved to Austin ostensibly for a job at the local newspaper, but more than anything, I was following the siren call of the live music scene, which was unlike anything I had ever experienced. I'm still a massive music fan, but 17 years later, I like to say that I came to Austin for the music and stayed for everything else. e "everything else" that tethers me to Austin includes the usual suspects, from the restaurant scene to Lady Bird Lake, but it's the city's unique film, literary and arts culture that feeds my soul on a daily basis. is is the season to celebrate it all, from the Austin Film Festival and the Texas Book Festival to November's many arts events, including the POP Austin International Art Show and the massive East Austin Studio Tour. You'll find information about all of these happenings in this issue. One of my highlights of the year is the film fest —now in its 24th year—which sets itself apart by focusing on the writer (which is why I love it so). e weeklong event includes celebrity panels and movie premieres, but the real stars are the screenplay sorcerers such as honoree Kenneth Lonergan, who won the Oscar this year for Manchester by the Sea and wrote one of my all-time favorites, You Can Count on Me. AFF is a natural in Austin, home to some of the world's best directors, from Linklater to Malick. Now there's a new name to add to that illustrious list: Macon Blair, who took home the U.S. Grand Jury Prize at this year's Sundance Film Festival and is filming his next movie this fall with stars Tracy Morgan and Luke Wilson, our cover subject for this issue. A Dallas native, Wilson described the movie as "a dark buddy comedy" during our interview. He is, of course, Austin film royalty himself and is here frequently. He recently paired up with his friends at Austin's Criquet Shirts, the arbiter of Caddyshack chic (Caddychic, anyone?), to be the brand's ambassador. We close out the issue with another friend of Wilson's: singer- songwriter Lukas Nelson, Willie's son, who will play both weekends of the ACL Music Festival in October. I'll be there at Zilker Park, as I have been every year since the festival started in 2002. It's the pitch-perfect place to remember why I came to Austin in the first place.
