C O M QUALIFYING TIMES Each year, Northern California's Monterey Car Week is the stop for all things that appeal to high-end motorsports fans—the times made all the more accurate and refined by Rolex. e scent of high-octane fuel exhaust from vintage racers on the track at Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca mingles with the aroma of caviar and Champagne at e Quail, A Motorsports Gathering at the Quail Lodge. ose scents, and the soupçon of freshly saddle-soaped leather upholstery at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, are the olfactory treats of Monterey Car Week. Rolex has been a supporter of the Monterey events since its partnership with the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance began in 1997 and enjoys a close relationship with motorsports dating back to the 1930s, when Sir Malcolm Campbell broke the 300 mph barrier in his Bluebird land-speed-record car sporting a Rolex on his wrist. As a guest of Rolex, I was privileged to unmatched access and hospitality for the week, including an interview with record-holding nine- time Le Mans winner and Rolex testimonee Tom Kristensen. "Rolex just embodies excellence," he says. "e company sponsors and supports the events that are so very important to this industry and the people in it. I will always be a fan." Adding to this horsepower, the Phillips (phillips.com) auction—the esteemed house's rst timepiece auction—in New York Oct. 26 of Paul Newman's Rolex Daytona watch, which the actor wore throughout his own racing career, has set watch lovers into a near-frenzy. Similar Rolex Paul Newman Cosmograph Daytona timepieces from that era are arguably the most desirable wristwatches for collectors. e version worn by the actor is slated to open bidding in the $1 million-plus range. But insiders predict it will sell for much more, with a portion of the proceeds going to the Nell Newman Foundation and the Newman's Own Foundation. e latest versions of the Rolex Cosmograph Daytona, unveiled at Baselworld this year, have taken the classic chronograph vibe and blended in added polish via 18K yellow, white and Everose gold executions, as well as placing the 40 mm watchcase on the innovative Oysterex bracelet. e new timepieces—as well as the auction—were on the lips of everyone in Monterey (in between ogling cars).
