W hen so much is changing— and when expectations are high—ritual and ceremony play a much-needed role. Time-honored traditions remind you of what has come before while emboldening you to face the future. The heralded University of Texas football program entered a new era in September with Coach Tom Herman's first season-opener against the University of Maryland. Despite coming off several losing seasons, UT entered the fall with a preseason ranking of 23 in the AP Top 25, raising the hopes of so many die-hard fans, including the more than 88,300 in attendance Sept. 2. The Longhorns might have a new coach and shiny $10,000 lockers in their newly renovated, state-of-the-ar t locker room, but some things stay the same. As the players made the pregame walk from the locker room to the field, they each touched the Longhorn steers in a cherished tradition for good luck. Although the game didn't turn out the way they wanted, with a 51– 41 loss to the Terrapins, the season is still young. It takes time to rebuild, as Coach Herman is the first to point out. Luck will catch up with the rituals soon enough. –Kathy Blackwell CLICK WHEN 10:45am 9.2.17 WHERE Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium PHOTOGRAPHER Jim Sigmon
