The U.S. Open began Monday, Aug. 28, and concludes Sunday, Sept. 10, with the men's singles final on ESPN. At this point in the ATP World Tour, players must contend with injuries and fatigue. Because of injuries, the star power may suffer somewhat, but the prize money certainly does not. The U.S. Open is the most lucrative and highest paying grand slam tournament in the world. This year's total prize is $50.4 million, and the tournament offers $3.7 million to its singles winners — almost $1 million more than Wimbledon. Despite the attractive purse of the U.S. Open, some players simply cannot participate. Last year's champion, Stan Wawrinka, won't be able to defend his title since pulling out of the 2017 season after Wimbledon with a knee injury that required surgery. Similarly, 2015 U.S. Open winner Novak Djokovic is missing from this year's tournament after being forced to retire during the quarter-finals at Wimbledon due to an elbow injury that ultimately ended his season. There is still plenty of tennis to play after the U.S. Open, with the Shanghai Masters and Paris Masters both sched- uled for October. The ATP World Tour Finals in November will feature the top eight players of the year, but the U.S. Open is one of the last chances to see all of the top talent in grand slam action before the 2018 season. Find out who takes the top prize at the U.S. Open in the men's singles final, broadcasting Sunday, Sept. 10, from the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center and airing on ESPN.
