The Daily Herald Sunday, September 10, 2017 19 By Adam Thomlison TV Media Q: Has TNT canceled "Ma- jor Crimes"? A: Actually, "Major Crimes" has been safe for a while now. It returns for a sixth season Tuesday, Oct. 31. The renewal announcement was made with little fanfare — the tone of TNT's statement made it seem like a bit of a no- brain decision for the channel. It cited the show's "stellar ensemble cast" and the fact that it's "one of cable's most- watched drama series" as reasons why it picked up the show for another season back in January, well before the fifth season had ended. However, it waited until just a couple of weeks ago to elaborate by announcing the actual return date and releas- ing a 30-second trailer video. While the trailer gave glimpses of what's to come, it was so brief it didn't give away any real plot points. However, a news release that came with it gave a few hints: "TNT's 'Major Crimes' faces its three most challenging cases, struggling to solve mys- teries mired in complex politi- cal conflicts having little to do with identifying and arresting murderers." Another interesting piece of info it revealed is that, along- side headliners Mary McDon- nell ("Battlestar Galactica") and Phillip P. Keene ("The Closer"), recurring guest star Billy Burke ("Zoo") will reprise his role as serial rapist/killer Phillip Stroh at some point in the season. All this good news came with a tiny bit of bad news, though. The sixth season will only be 13 episodes long — the shortest season the show's had since its debut in 2012 (which was only 10 episodes long). Last season had 21 episodes, and season 4 had 23. Q: Who are those guys that make the Sonic com- mercials? They are hilarious. A: Sonic Drive-In's two com- mercial spokesmen, whom it refers to simply as "the two guys," have appeared in sev- eral silly and somewhat unpre- dictable ads for the company. It's not surprising, then, that the two stars are masters of the silly and unpredictable: They're improv comedians T.J. Jago- dowski and Peter Grosz. Jagodowski actually taught improv at the iO Theater in Chicago and was a member of the legendary Second City troupe. Grosz was a member of the almost-as-legendary Up- right Citizens Brigade troupe. In fact, Sonic claims the ads are themselves largely improvised by the duo. Jagodowski and Grosz are by far best known for their Sonic ads, which they've been doing since 2004. There was a bit of a break in there, from 2010 to 2012, when they were "phased out" by the franchise. Even that turned into fodder for another joke when the company rehired them to do a series of videos pretending to campaign to get their old jobs back. Despite their success, and their apparent natural chemis- try, the two have only appeared together in one other project, and in very small roles — in fact, it was just one scene. Jagodowski played "IRS Co- Worker #4" and Grosz "IRS Co-Worker #5" in the sleeper- hit comedy "Stranger Than Fiction" (2006), in a scene that sets up how boring the life of the protagonist (played by Will Ferrell) is, leaving little room for their comedic flair.
