You can read in the Old Testament how the Spirit of God would 'come upon' peo- ple. It wasn't until Jesus ful- filled His part in reconciling God the Father with people, that the Spirit of God could once again live within peo- ple. Do you realize what an awesome thing that is? Even Mary, the mother of Jesus, could only have the Spirit of God come upon her—(Luke 1:35). In the Old Testament people were taught to cir- cumcise the flesh to show the covenant they had with God. Now we can allow the Spirit of God to circumcise our heart. "For he is not a [real] Jew who is only one outwardly, nor is [true] cir- cumcision something ex- ternal and physical. But he is a Jew who is one inward- ly; and [true] circumcision is circumcision of the heart, by the Spirit, not by [the ful- fillment of] the letter [of the Law]" (Romans 8:28 -29). Praise God we don't live in a time where the Holy Spirit just comes upon us, but that He lives within us. His whole intention since creating Ad- am and Eve was to have us, His children, live eternally in heaven with Him. And it starts with making that deci- sion here on the earth. "Because if you acknowl- edge and confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord [recognizing His power, au- thority, and majesty as God], and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart a person believes [in Christ as Sav- ior] resulting in his justifi- cation [that is, being made righteous—being freed of the guilt of sin and made ac- ceptable to God]; and with the mouth he acknowledg- es and confesses [his faith openly], resulting in and confirming [his] salvation" (Romans 10 :9 -10). The pastor is in Every Tuesday morning on New York City's Upper East Side, Gregory Fryer sits in a Peanuts-style booth offering prayer and a listen- ing ear to passersby. Initial- ly, the pastor wanted to draw attention to his church, but instead he ended up notic- ing all the "hungry hearts" in the neighborhood. Fry- er has been pleasantly sur- prised by all the people who open up to him. "I think they like the idea of a pas- tor being on the sidewalk," he says. Although a sign on the booth reads "Spiritual ad- vice 5 cents," the pastor keeps a plate of nickels handy if people want to put one in his jar. Some peo- ple donate much more - and some even pray for Fryer. The pastor says he was inspired by Peanuts charac- ter Lucy van Pelt, who has the "audacity, the courage to brazenly sit there out in pub- lic and offer to deal with im- portant matters." I ran across this short sto- ry this week and thought I would share it. Seven Miles for Me Leaving a store, I re- turned to my car only to find that I'd locked my keys and cell phone inside. A teenager riding his bike saw me kick a tire. "What's wrong? " he asked. I explained my situa- tion. "But even if I could call my wife," I said, "she can't bring me her car key, since this is our only car." He handed me his cell phone. "Call your wife and tell her I'm coming to get her key," he said. "That's seven miles round trip." "Don't worry about it," he replied. An hour later, he returned with the key. I offered him some money, but he refused. "Let's just say I needed the exercise," he said. Then, like a cowboy in the movies, he rode off into the sunset. Sto- ry by Clarence W. Stephens, Nicholasville, Ky. This is just an example of how kindness can help oth- er. This past week, I felt this same kindness. A flower was dropped off at the office and no name was left. They just wanted to make my day. I felt so blessed to have some- one care that much to think about me in that way. This week, think of some- one that you can bless.
