Ryan Fisher Staff Writer Page 4 September 28, 2012 Many years of volunteering finally recognized Sherry Drake and Laird Richards receive awards from the state organization for the NCSP Two of Red Bluff High School teachers, Mrs. Drake and Mr. Richards, recently received awards for their many years of volunteering for the Special Olympics. Drake has been involved for 30 years and Richards for 25. The state organization for the Northern California Special Olympics decided they needed to award and appreciate the long time volunteers. "This is definetly a great honor, its nice to be recognized by the state for my contributions to the Special Olympics," said Richards. Drake started her volunteer work for Sonoma County during her high school and junior college years. " My involvement in the Special Olympics is more local; I am not into the administration stuff, just the volunteering for our community," said Drake. Mr. Richards began his volunteer work in 1982. "Me and some colleagues of mine put on the Special Olympics for the school district, It was an amazing experience for my first time helping," said Richards. This award is a great way to support these teachers in all that they do. "The food because itʼs amazing." Haley Reinman(10) Jim Reed, a local politicain, runs for con- gress and is interviewed by Alec Sims, RBHS senior, about why it's important for young people to be innvolved in gov- ernment and how they can get involved. Q & A: Politics "I just enjoy the rides and seeing all of my friends." Greg Dufour (11) Q: What is your opinion on why it is important for my generation, teenagers that is, to be active in politics? A: Well, first of all, you're going to be voting, or, eligible to vote as soon as your able to be 18, and if you're not paying attention for a few years before you get to 18, it's pretty hard to get up to speed, to know what you are doing, and what your views on life and things that are affected by politics are. Q: What do you think would be the best course of action to get the youth to be more in- terested and in-depth when it comes to politics? A: Well you have to pick issues that are important to the youth…Education is the one that really jumps out at me… I really feel we need to be spending more money on education, and it's an investment to the future. Q: How can an individual get involved in politics and be an actual supportive part? "The zipper because thatʼs where I had my first kiss." Courtny Abbassi (12) A: I can put you to work, as a volunteer, immediately. Just shoot an email to us, if you go info I-N-F-O at jimreed2012.com (info@jimreed2012.com) that will get to us and we will channel it to the right people to get you busy." Laura Defonte Staff Writer Tehama County Fair showcases FFA animals and much more Every year, Tehama County holds the Tehama County District Fair. This year it is being held the 26th-30th of September and every year our school likes to include itself in many different ways. One way the high school involves itself is through the arts. Students enter arts and crafts items into contests to receive first place, second place, and third place ribbons. There is advanced categories and intermediate so everyone gets a fair chance of winning something. Our schools most involvement is through FFA (Future Farmers of America). FFA involvement at the fair is mainly through marketing animals or breeding animals. 39 students will be showing animals this year through FFA. Our schools animals Spartan Health Mitch Fox Staff Writer Walking around school during the end of lunch we see many people drinking energy "The carnies because they are fun to watch." Mr. Norton(Teacher) drinks. They may satify a taste crave and give you that boost of energy needed to get through the last two periods of the day, but, little do teens know, energy drinks are unhealthy and hazardous to your body. Some of the drinks have as much caffeine as 14 cans of soda! Soda cannot have too much caffeine in them because there is a law that limits them to the amount of caffeine per ounce of soda. However, there is no such law restricting the amount of caffeine in energy drinks because they are considered to be dietary supplements. As you keep drinking more and more energy drinks the caffeine starts to build up inside you that causes not only short-term, but also long-term effects. A common short term effect is arrhythmia, or an irregular heartbeat. Some short-term effects are insomnia, high blood pressure, osteoporosis, infertility, heart disease, and ulcers. When you drink an excessive amount of them when you are pregnant, it can even cause a miscarriage. Mixing energy drinks with alcohol is especially dangerous. When you are just ride all the unsafe rides and, oh, watching my daughter sing." Mrs. Rodriguez(Teacher) "I like watching my children Sound Off/Claire Samay drinking alcohol your body will know when you have had enough or too much. You will start to become tired and maybe even throw up. But when you mix alcohol and energy drinks, the ingredients in the energy drink takes away the ability your body has to know when you have too much. It's not the caffeine that does this too the body, it's the other ingredients labeled on the bottle of many energy drinks such as taurine, glucose, and ginseng. Energy drinks work by sending caffeine into your body which makes adrenaline. This makes your heart beat faster and causes your liver to release large amounts of sugar, giving a person all of the extra energy. Energy drinks may taste good and give a short "high", but along to these benefits there are many. If you eat and drink right your body doesn't need to get energy from these drinks. range from breeding swine, breeding goats, market swine, market lambs, market steers, and meat poultry. The difference between breeding and marketing animals is that the breeding animals get sold as meat to eat, but are just used as show animals. Market animals are sold to individual buyers or company buyers for meat use. The showers show in different categories: "Fair is the time of year to splurge on sweets and junk food... " -Laura Defonte conformation and showmanship. Conformation is for the look of the animal and is mandatory for sale. Showmanship is for your own personal benefit and for your skill on showing an animal. You also get the opportunity to win more prizes with showing an animal. You can win Grand Champion or Reserve Grand Champion, which gets you a better chance of making more money at sale. Along with this, the shower will get f lowers, a trophy, a ribbon, a sash for the animal, and the oppurtunity to walk in the parade of champions. The best part of fair for many people is, of course, the fair rides, socialization, and the food. Most people attend fair because it is a fun, easy, and it has an entertaining environment to meet up with friends and family to have a good time. Some may look at it as a time to escape the stresses of every day life. Fair is the time of year where you can splurge on sweets and fried food endlessly because it is everywhere. The rides though is the most enjoyable part that you can't get many places. The Tehama County Fair has many rides. These include kiddie rides for the young children, and fun, scary rides for the older kids who can take a scare and enjoy
