Charlotte Smith Jacob places second in national welding contest The winners of the 53rd Annual SkillsUSA Cham- pionships in Welding were announced on Friday, June 23, during the awards cere- mony for the SkillsUSA Na- tional Leadership and Skills Conference. The conference was held Monday, June 19, through Friday, June 23, at Freedom Hall and the Ken- tucky Exposition Center in Louisville, Ky. More than 15,000 students, teachers, education leaders, and rep- resentatives from 600 na- tional corporations, trade associations, businesses and labor unions participated in the event. Pike Central vocational welding student Logan Ja- cob placed second and re- ceived a silver medal in the welding contest. Jacob is a 2017 graduate of Northeast Dubois High School who participated in the Pike Cen- tral vocational welding pro- gram under the direction of welding instructor Kev- in Carter through the Pato- ka Valley Vocational Coop- erative. Jacob is the ninth Pike Central welding student to place in the national con- test in the last 17 years. For his accomplishment, Jacob received Lincoln and Mill- er welding machines; a cut- ting torch outfit; Carhartt clothing valued at $250 ; a one-year membership in the American Welding So- ciety; and numerous tools of the trade. Competitors received con- test drawings and a set of welding procedure specifi- cations. All drawings, weld- ing symbols and welding terms conformed to the lat- est edition of the American Welding Society standards. Through a series of stations, contestants were tested on various aspects of welding: measuring weld replicas; us- ing weld measuring gauges; laying out a plate and using oxy-acetylene equipment to cut several holes that are checked for accuracy and quality; Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW ) on steel making welds in various po- sitions using short circuit- ing transfers; Flux Cored Arc Welding (FCAW ) us- ing a shielding gas, making welds in various positions and, using a combination machine capable of provid- ing the correct welding cur- rent for shielded metal arc (SMAW ) and gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW ). Competitors completed the steel project and welded an aluminum project in vari- ous positions using a variety of filler metals. Contestants were judged while assembling and welding the project. Cer- tified welding inspectors judged the completed proj- ect through visual examina- tion, measuring size of fillet welds, and weld reinforce- ment.
