The Press-Dispatch Wednesday, July 12, 2017 C-5 HOME LIFE TO ADVERTISE: Call: 812-354-8500 Email: ads@pressdispatch.net Visit: 820 E. Poplar Street, Petersburg Deadline: 5 p.m. on Monday The most common way people give up their power is by thinking they don't have any. ALICE WALKER Sweet's Column by Barbara Sweet Katiedid vs... by Katiedid Langrock K-9 names Why aren't dogs named Shannon anymore? The bimbo yellow Lab next door was named Shannon. I know this be- cause my entire childhood was spent listening to myriad voices screaming, "Shannon! Get back! Shannon, come! Shannon, heel! Shannon, don't eat that squirrel! Shannon, dig a hole for that squirrel you just killed! " I hated Shannon. So did my dog, a Portuguese water dog named Ted- dy. Shannon and Teddy had nothing in common. Shannon was energetic, friendly and dumb as a dodo. Teddy was smart and moody and demanded you earn his attention. But they both had one thing in common: a normal dog name. Shannon was one of two dogs named Shannon. In the early '90s, their name was basically the Jessica or Jennifer of every fourth-grade classroom. And Teddy, short for Teddybear, was just as common among canines. Two of my best friends had dogs named Teddy; another friend had a dog named Bear. The other neighborhood pets includ- ed Max, Fluffy, Rascal, Ginger, Bud- dy, Maggie and Kitty. And yes, Kitty was a kitty. Oh, how we mocked Cutie Pie when she came home from the pet store. "Cutie Pie? What kind of dog is named Cutie Pie? " we railed. A dog ahead of its time, that's what kind of dog. Last night, while I was teaching my class on writing for children, one of my students said she wanted to name her main character after her own dog and asked whether I saw a problem with that. I said probably not and asked to hear the dog's name. Crisscross Applesauce Lemon Squash Peppermint Floss. "What? " I asked. She smiled and repeated, slow- ly, "Criss. Cross. Apple. Sauce. Lem. Mon. Squash. Pep. Per. Mint. Floss." "Right. But what do you call her? " "CrisscrossAppleSau- ceLemonSquashPepper- mintFloss." Of course. No nick- names allowed in the land of weird dog names. And good ol' Flossy, as I like to call her, is only the latest tongue twister to come out of a long line of loquacious dog owners. Lately, I have not met a single Shan- non or Teddy or Fluffy. In their place have been Moonstruck Cupcake, Thunder Boom Boom, and Twitchy Kevin. I recently met a Boston terri- er named Greg and immediately said to the owner, "Wow! A single-syllable dog name! " She looked at me, straight- faced, and said, "It's short for Grega- saurus ComingThisWay." Of course it is. I blame "How I Met Your Mother." When the characters Lily and Mar- shall decided to give their son the middle name Wait-for-it, they made full-sentence names into a thing. Sure, Marvin Wait-for-it Eriksen may be a cute fictional on-screen charac- ter name, but if I ever have to dog-sit for Cheese-Puffs-Are-Better-Than- Cheez-Doodles or Carolina-Spring- board-Loves-Piano-More-Than-Earl, I'm going to need to buy an inhaler to get through saying their names. Al- so, poor Earl! Who is this Earl? And why does he deserved to be defamed in this way? At first, I thought the obscure pet names were a Hollywood thing, but then I moved out of Hollywood. So then I thought it was a living-in-the- wild thing, but even my friend in the suburbs of Washington, D.C., has a four-legged loved one named Holly Bo-Bolly McMolly Is Not Tall-ee. Uncommon names are cool. I have an uncommon name. My kids have un- common names. My rab- bit, Pig, has an uncom- mon name. But is there really anything so wrong with naming your Chihua- hua Sally? Can't the hipsters do us a solid and take back the names Fluffy and Scruffy just to be ironic? Isn't that their thing, to trailblaze us back into yesteryear, when things made a tad more sense and pants were a tad too loose? Where, oh where, is the great micro-mustachioed wisdom of the hip- ster millennial to set us straight from our sentence-structure naming obses- sion? I'm not asking for much in life, just nicknames! Texting an anecdote about your precocious pup Holly Bo-Bol- ly McMolly Is Not Tall-ee would be a whole lot faster if you just typed "Hol- ly." Nicknames, people! Nicknames. Or – here's a crazy idea – actually just name your dog Holly. "Katie! Come over here right now! " I heard my new next-door neighbor yell angrily. I ran over to her and asked, "What's wrong? " "Oh," she said, a little embarrassed, "I meant my dog Katie." Crisscross Applesauce Lemon Squash Peppermint Floss is growing on me. One of our Winslow stars has passed last week, Ken- ny Curtis, who was 86 years old. I knew him and the family at the Curtis Funeral Home, the Winslow Lions Club, and around town. He has worn quite a few hats in his lifetime and had the love of family. This one isn't from the kids' va- cation, but this postcard # 627 is from another star who started her vacation af- ter the Fourth of July. The postcard has a shack with wood siding and a cedar shake roof, one door and two windows and says "I finally found a house I can AFFORD! " The back has "I wish you were here! " then "Hi Sweets, Greetings from Logan, Ohio, next step is Cuyahoga National Park near Cleveland, Jamie Tor- mohlen." Thanks, Jamie, for the postcard of the cabin in the woods that we all may af- ford. Have fun! In Winslow, the Pato- ka River was just right for floating with the rain we had on Friday with light- ening and thunder. The river was half full. Saturday was Clog the Patoka where you could float or paddle from Pike State Forest, or you could take a short- er route at McCord's Ford and end at the Winslow Riv- erside Park, where the Li- ons served breakfast and lunch. The different types of floats were interesting to see. There were a few stars I haven't seen in a while, like Marilyn Tooley and her husband, Julie Reisen- beck, Shannon Nelson and T.J. Sharp. Kyana even had some kids she knew call out her name and Mark, there was a guy who told me he was a chaperone when you were a little fella. The Otwell fireworks were great. There were lots of oohs and ahhs. To all of the stars who have a job for the Poe- hlein Reunion, there is a meet- ing on July 29 at 9 a.m. at the Corner Booke Shoppe in Winslow. September 16 is the Winslow Corn Festival and the Original Light Up Winslow Parade. Septem- ber 23 is the 10th annu- al Tractor Drive in Pike County. September 30 is the Spurgeon Festival with Dwayne Spaw. From Norm: As most of you know, this July 4, Sen- ator Mark Messmer invit- ed us to walk with him in the Otwell and Vincennes Fourth of July parades. Ot- well's parade was its 60th. Hats off to all who put it on all those years. We met up with Mark and Kim Messmer, Lau- ra, along with Jake Sher- man, and lots of his friends. What a great time! Here is something cool in my eyes: While getting ready for the parade, Mark asked for vol- unteers to carry the Amer- ican flag. Just that quick, my granddaughter stepped right up and said "I will." That was awesome! Kyana Hensley did so with pride, and at that moment, I saw a cool Fourth of July unfold right before us. It was so great to see so many take part in it; you all made us feel welcome, and Mark's playing was awe- some. In fact, everyone was clapping and the little ones were dancing along to the music. This was our first time at the Vincennes parade. On the way I said to Barb, "No one will know me here," this is going to be fun. They had many different floats and made us feel welcome there, too. Kyana got a pic- ture with Miss Vincennes University Ashly Green. I found an old friend who knew me at the parade. A fter, we all had a laugh and the parade got rolling again. Along with Mark's mu- sic, Kim and Kyana were big hits too as they were handing out candy. It was a great holiday. Barb: How is your sum- mer? Ours had been terrif- ic and with more things yet to come. Try to keep cool in the heat and humidity. My mom taught me to carry a wet cloth with me outside when it is hot. I believe the lights are about to dim on this week's ramblings, but keep an eye on family and friends. Slow down and enjoy your sur- roundings, keep up with the smiles, waves and day Hi to everyone you see this week.
