Page 8 May 26, 2017 Sports Easton Ross Staff Writer JV baseball softball lose The Red Bluff High School JV football team's games do not start until next school year, but their devoted players are having practice right now. When asked what they do at practice, Quintin Oliver, a soon to be junior said "We do drill work with each posi- tion, linemen work on stanc- es and practice plays. Run- ning backs work on speed and run their routes, etc." O l i v e r , s o p h o - more, has been play- ing football for roughly six to sev- en years. O l i v e r can be on the offen- sive line of the defen- sive line. O l i v e r believes the hardest thing about football is "Conditioning. It's rough, but it gives discipline. When we're towards the end of a game and we are down, that's where our discipline and conditioning come in." Oliver's goal for the season is to try to start over some of the seniors to prove that juniors can work harder than them. When asked about the im- provements his team could make he responded by say- ing "It's still too early in the season to figure that out." Logan Robertson, sopho- more, has been playing for nine years and he believes he knows what his team could i m - prove on. "My team could improve on cooperation, effort, and just give it their all," Robertson. Robertson is the team's back- up quarterback and he knows West Valley is going to be their toughest competitor next year because their good every year. Robertson's goal for next season is to make league. Sky- ler Collins has been play- ing football for two years and he is the team's cornerback. Collin's goal for next season is to not get an injury. To have his team i m p r o v e C o l l i n s said "We should lis- ten to the c o a c h e s more and never get c o c k y . " W h e n a s k e d a b o u t what he t h o u g h t the hardest thing in football was, he responded with "The hard- est things are playing out in the heat, working your hardest, and not back talking the coaches." With a committed team, knowledgeable coaches, and with sheer will power guiding them, the Red Bluff High School JV football team is looking forward to a strong season next school year. John Miller will be the JV football coach. Easton Ross Staff Writer Marissa Mills Staff Writer Baseball is the United State's national pastime. Baseball has been in the United states since the mid 1800's and it is obvious why people still play the sport. The simpleness of such an intense game that takes immense technique to play well makes baseball one of the best sports out there. The Red Bluff High School JV boys baseball B team had a balanced sea- son with a record of 7-6, but gunned and finished their season with one more win. When asked how he thought the team could im- prove, Freshman, Leslie Shank answered "We could work a little on, infielding, on the outfield, and batting. When we hit we need to get line drives on the ground." Leslie's goal for this sea- son is to get a starting on the team and get a triple play. At practice the team works on catching grounders and pop f lies. As well as getting the signs for running bases down. Leslie's can be left field or he can be a second basemen. Anoth- er freshman A u s t i n Keffer on the A team has been playing for about twelve years. At their practice they do conditioning constantly and practice bunting such as sui- cide bunts, and sacrifice bunts. Keffer's batting average for the season is .362. Kef- fer thinks the team could im- prove " If we play as a team, and focus during practice." Keffer's one goal for the season is to al- ways have over a .350. Alex Gonzalez is on the B team. Gonzalez has been play- ing baseball for twelve years and plays second or third base. Gonzalez believes en- terprise was the team's toughest competitor. When asked how his team could improve Gonzalez said "We could talk and commu- nicate more on the field." Gonzalez says the hard- est thing about baseball is "Maintaining your batting average and winning games." The Red Bluff High School JV A team's last game was on May 4, Thurs- day against Chico at Chico, while the B team's last game was on May 3, Wednes- day against Sutter at Sutter. The 2016-2017 junior va- risty baseball team has ex- celled dramastically through- out the whole entire season. As a team, they grew together both in skill and in friendship. The Red Bluff High School Varsity Girls softball team traveled to Palo Cedro to play against the Foothill High School Cougars for the Section Title game on Saturday, May 20th at 2 pm. The Lady Spartans came up short, being defeated 9-3 by Foothill. The Courgars scoring two runs in the first inning and one in the third. After a scoreless five innings for Red Bluff, they rallied to score 3 runs in the sixth inning. Senior Allyson Drury hit a RBI double that brought in one runner to tie the game 3-3. However, Foothill answered back scoring a total of six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to push their lead to 9-3, where it would remain for the rest of the game. When asked what the team struggled with during the game, senior Kenzie Colgate replied, "Unfortunately, defense is what wins games and we had a few mistakes that cost us the game." Foothill has one of the best pitchers in the league, Jessica Seely, who proved to be a challenge for the Spartans to hit off of. Kenzie said, "Our team in the beginning struggled to hit off Jessica but when we threw our hands hard we got on her. Once sunshine came in our bats came around." Although the Lady Spartans had a few tough times during the game, Kenzie shared some of the highlights from it. "One of the highlights was breakfast. It was truly an emotional rollercoaster that day but my tears were filled with joy. I'm definitely happy I got to spend those last moments with a Spartan jersey on my back and share it with those girls, especially the seniors." This was a very emotional game for the 4 seniors on the team as they stepped onto the field for a final time. "My emotions during the game were to always have a positive outlook and keep pushing like coach always said, 'Red Bluff doesn't die and we'll go down fighting' and that's exactly what we did," Kenzie replied when asked about how she felt during the game. "We could work a lit tle on, inf ield- ing, on the outf ield, and bat ting.
