Orban and fellow Vietnam vet Joe Campbell told a crowd at the Milwaukee County War Memorial that the Ozaukee County-based organization will now accept Vietnam veterans on their day- trips to Washington, D.C. Honor Flight is a national program with more than 130 hubs that have flown more than 150,000 veterans to see their memorials in the nation's capital. The Stars and Stripes hub — the sec- ond in the state after one in La Crosse — was started by a group of Ozaukee County volunteers, including then- County Board Supervisor Joe Dean. The hub has honored more than 4,900 World War II and Korean War veterans since 2008 by providing one-day, all-expenses- paid trips. SSHF President Paula Nelson said those who served in the Vietnam War have patiently waited for their turn to take the Honor Flight. Most of the World War II vets and many of the Korean War veterans have had the chance to fly, so now it is time for the next generation of veterans to enjoy their day of honor, she said. "The incredible support that we have received from our friends and neighbors throughout southeastern Wisconsin has made it possible for us to begin flying this next group of deserving veterans," Nelson said. Applications from veterans who served during the Vietnam conflict will be accepted starting Monday and can be sub- mitted by mail or online at www.starsand- stripeshonorflight.org. Those eligible will have served between the dates of Feb. 28, 1961, and May 7, 1975. "This gives us a chance to right a wrong and allows us to show these veter- ans the respect they deserve," said Dr. Michael McBride of the Milwaukee VA Medical Center.
