Page 7 April 14, 2017 Sports The 2017 Track and Field team is running through their season quite smoothly. Red Bluff High School S o p h o m o r e , T a y l o r M c K e r r a s , who runs sprints was asked, "How is your season going so far?" responded with "so far we have been doing really good as a team." On April 1 they attended the Hornet Invite meet at Enterprise High School c o m i n g out with some amazing accomplishments. At this meet the distance runners were the ones that shined with almost everyone setting a new personal record time. Although they have some smaller meets coming up (Oroville, West Valley, Yreka) they are preparing and working very hard for the biggest meet, the Grants Pass Invitational on April 29. T h e i r p r e v i o u s M e d f o r d meet was a tough one so the team hopes to come a away with a few more wins and to take away some things to improve on from their last trip to O r e g o n . The team has been p r e p a r i n g and are ready for finals. F o l l o w i n g the biggest track meet, the team will end their season with an Enterprise meet and are hopeful to continue on to state. a prosperous season Marissa Mills Staff Writer The Red Bluff High School Junior Varsity Girls softball team is celebrating a successful season so far and are very optimistic about how the rest of their season will play out. The team has made several improvements so far and hope to carry their momentum throughout the remaining games. When asked how she would describe her first season of high school athletics, freshman Emily Chrasta who has played for six years replied, "It's been pretty good so far and I'm having a lot of fun. We're working really well as a team, and we're learning how to communicate better." "The season has been really good, I love my team and we have improved a lot from the beginning of the season until now," added sophomore Jalynn McCray. The 2017 Red Bluff High School varsity baseball team is looking to go all the way with their astounding record of eleven wins and one loss. The team consists of sixteen players and is coached by Mr. Ryland Sanders. Wesley Clawson is a senior, and he plays two positions: outfield and pitcher. He has been playing for thirteen years, and throughout this season, he has hit one home-run. Clawson stated that he would like to see their team get to the section championship. When asked what college he wants to play baseball for, Clawson stated, "I want to play for San Jose State because the coaches are phenomenal people." Clawson said that since the beginning of the season, the team has become more consistent. Evan Tanner has been playing baseball for thirteen years. On the varsity team, he plays first base, or he is the pitcher. He too would like to make it all the way to the section championship. Tanner said, "After high school, I want to play at the next level at Shasta College. He thinks that their toughest competitor this season will be Pleasant Valley high school. "We have improved in keeping our bats going," stated Tanner. Eric Spencer is a senior, and he has been playing baseball for thirteen years. He plays the position shortstop. Spencer said that he wants to shut down Pleasant Valley in a baseball game. He also agrees that this season's toughest competitor will be Pleasant Valley high school. "After high school," Spencer said, "I want to play for Shasta College." Kolby Button, a senior, has been playing baseball ever since he was old enough to play t-ball; so right around twelve or thirteen years. He plays two positions: pitcher and third base. However, he is mainly a pitcher. The Red Bluff high school's varsity baseball team will be playing Tuesday, April 18 at Chico high school at 4:00. They will be playing the Pleasant Valley Vikings. field. Chrasta said, "We're really strong on defense right now, and we all work really hard to play as a team. Our communication has improved and now we are talking more on the field. " Jalynn McCray replied, "We work together as a unit and we pick each other up when someone gets down on t h e m s e l v e s , we're really supportive of one another. Our team is like a little family and we are all looking out for each other on the field. The bond we share on the field definitely helps us play so well together. I think it's why we have had such a successful s e a s o n so far. " Something the throw the ball when we field it so we're quick and don't waste time thinking about what play to make," said Jalynn. "We play against teams who are very aware on the field and are able to think fast, so that is something we're working on." "Our toughest opponent for league is Chico High. They're really smart with the ball and know how to handle it, so we want to be able to beat them. I feel confident in my team's ability to play well against them," said Jalynn. They face Chico one more time this season, at Chico High o n May 5. "The teamwork is there, but sometimes we can get into a slump and lose our momentum before we start playing to our full potential again," said Chrasta. "If we make a mistake on the field and keep thinking about it, we continue to make mistakes and it's hard to get out of that slump," she added. "We hang our heads when something bad happens, if we make an error, and that's something we're working on improving," added Jalynn. To help fix this problem, the team has been working on situational drills and b a t t i n g techniques at practice.
