April 14, 2017 Sports Spartan's Coach of the Issue Chris Sinclair: JV Softball T This month's coach of the issue is Chris Sinclair. This is his 25th year coaching. Sinclair has always loved coaching but has never coached girls softball here at the school. When asked why he decided to become a softball coach, Sinclair said , "I have always played sports growing up and I wanted to continue to be part of the athletic program after I stopped playing." "It gives a classroom teacher the opportunity to work with students in a completely different environment," is what Sinclair responded when asked why he likes coaching. At the end of the day, his motto is, "Play hard." V softball aims for 2017 playoffs T he Varsity Softball team is looking forward to finishing the season strong after a successful preseason, beating tough opponents such Pleasant Valley, Chico, and Shasta. As several seniors take the field for their last season, the softball team is determined to achieve their goals and make lots of memories together while they can. One of the team's ultimate goals for the season is to beat Foothill and make it to playoffs. When asked who their toughest competition for league is, the team agreed that it is Foothill. "Their pitcher is really good, she's one of the best. We get in our own minds and bring ourselves down before playing them and that's something we need to work on," said sophomore Alexis Zamora. As a team, their ability to work together on the field is one of their biggest strengths."When asked how she would describe the season so far, Alexis Zamora replied, "It's been good and fun. I love my team and we are improving a lot together. We all get along really well and are supportive of each other, and that makes the season memorable." As for the seniors, Emily Tatro replied, "It has been really good and fun, I'm sad that it's ending so quickly. I hope I finish my senior season with a bang and go out strong, we really want to make it to playoffs because we haven't for awhile and it would be special for the seniors. Jv boys baseball progresses greatly throughout their victorious season Bryce Stephenson Staff Writer Golf play continues The Red Bluff High School 2017 varsity boys tennis team have been recently netting in the wins against their recent competitors. There are a total of seventeen boys on the varsity tennis team this year. Trent Kitchell is attending his freshman year at Red Bluff High, and he has been playing tennis ever since one week before the day of tryouts. His favorite part about playing tennis is getting to play net while doing doubles; playing net is when you are in the front of the court and your partner is on the back side of the court. The team's toughest competitor is "Pleasant Valley because they are full of very competitive players," stated by Kitchell. His team goal for this season is to get to the state tournament and compete in the championship match. Kitchells personal goal for this season is to prepare for the upcoming seasons and get better and better. The team's next match is April twenty fourth at Foothill High School. The are really going out for the win. Their team goal is to have a great record this season. Something they all mentioned was that they would all love to have the school come and show some spirit. Logan Carver Staff Writer Story by: Marissa Mills Easton Ross Staff Writer Golf is one of the calmest sports in the world, but it requires the most supreme patience, technique, and sportsmanship to play the game at the most basic level. Golf is also one of the few sports you can do your entire life so almost anyone can play it. Golf originated i n S c o t l a n d in the 15th c e n t u r y and is now p l a y e d l a r g e l y a r o u n d the world. The 2016-2017 Red Bluff High School boys golf team is doing exceptionally well with many promising players this year . They have played six matches and the highest they have placed in a match is 2nd place. A freshman on the team, Luke Downey has been playing golf for eight years of his life. Downey's goal for the season is to make it into the fourth slot on the team. When asked who their toughest competitor was going to be this season, Downey said "Either Shasta or Pleasant Valley because their whole team shoots very consistently." When asked how the team could improve Downey responded by saying the team could hit lower and have more power behind their swings d u r i n g m a t c h e s . Downey is looking forward to a promising season. Nick Miller, a freshman has been playing since he was thirteen, but has not formally been on a team before. Miller's goal for the season is to get a birdie which is an extremely hard thing to work for, but Miller believes he can do it. The golf teams next match this season will be hosted by Chico on Thursday April 27 at Butte Creek at 1:30. In a 1792 the earliest known game of baseball in the United States was in Massachusetts. The first team to play baseball under the normal rules were the Knickerbockers for New York. The club was distributed on September 23, 1845, as a club for the upper middle social classes of New York City. The club members which in large part deal with organizational matters but which also lay out rules for playing the game. One of the important rules was "soaking" or "plugging" the runner; under the late rules, a fielder could put a runner out by hitting the runner with the thrown ball, also known as Indian tag. The Knickerbocker Rules wanted their fielders to tag or force the runner to r u n into the out and this rule made baseball the game it is today with less argument opportunities. The Red Bluff high school 2017 junior varsity baseball team has been playing at a competitive level of baseball. So far this season, they have won every game as of March 29. J a c o b Acree is a sophomore on the team. He is a catcher, and he has been playing baseball ever since he was 5 -ye a r s - old . So far this season he has hit z e r o home runs. "My personal goal is to have a batting average over .300," said Acree. He likes baseball because he likes hanging out with friends and "hitting things with sticks." He said, "Our first game was against Shasta, and we won. We hit really well and Bryan Acree threw a really good game." Next year he is excited for varsity because he says that it will be more competitive. Austin Keffer has been playing baseball for twelve years, and he too, is a catcher. However, occasionally he is a left fielder. From the beginning of the s e a s o n , K e f f e r s a i d that they improved in their defense and getting along better. When Keffer was asked how many home runs he has hit this season he jokingly said, "In JV we bunt; we don't hit home runs." His personal goal is to successfully put down three suicide bunts, but he said that all that matters is t h a t they win. A s u i c i d e bunt is when a runner is at third, a n d the runner at t h i r d gets home. "My f i r s t high school game was awesome and really fun just playing at a new level of competition and doing well," Keffer said Blake Tweedt has been playing baseball for eight years. He switches between three positions: shortstop, second base, and outfield. So far this season he has hit one home run. "My personal goal is to have a batting average above 300," said Tweedt. Since the start of the season to now, Tweedt said that they have been playing smarter baseball, and they play more as a team now. "My first high school was fun, and it was a good experience," said Tweedt. The 2017 Red Bluff high school junior varsity team's next game will be Tuesday, April 18 against the Pleasant Valley Vikings at Red Bluff high school at 6 p.m and they are hoping for the win. Many of this years Junior Varsity baseball team players mentioned that they were going to have a very good season this year due to the fact that their team has played together before. The win is soon to come along.
