One of these opportunities is the NASA Internship Program offered through Lassen Volcanic National Park and NASA. This internship program is unique to Red Bluff High, and you will not find anything like it in the country. This makes the program an attractive possibility to students here at Red Bluff High as a way to set themselves apart from others whether it is college applications, scholarship applications, or resumes. The program works hand in hand with credible NASA research scientists and Lassen Volcanic National Park in order to conduct field studies and research on the pH levels and other environmental factors at the national park. The internship offers the students that participate with ample opportunity for learning and the development of research skills that aren't usually taught at the high school level. Currently the interns are working in a large, cumulative research report and presentation that encompasses all of their studies and field samples that were conducted throughout the year at Lassen Volcanic National Park. Basically, the interns are assisting with the search for microbial life at the national park so that NASA researches can look for the same sort of microbial life in mars in order to continue research to see if Mars can sustain life. Omi Renfroe, a first year intern, stated, "I'm in the program because I wanted to expand my knowledge on astrobiology also it's one of the only programs in the nation that is like this so it was a unique opportunity that I wanted to be involved on. Also I think it's amazing that these scientists take time out of their busy lives to help high school students learn the interactions Between Lassen volcanic park and how it correlates to the stuff that they are finding out on Mars." The class offers more than just a fancy internship to put on a college transcript or resume. Instead the class offers valuable skills that can be applied in real life situations. These include team work skills, study and research capabilities, and the importance of hard work. It's is no doubt that the students that come out of this internship are well rounded students with incredible discipline. This time of year, every year, the Senior's are required to do something called the Stock Project. Mr. Cleary, Mr. Ackley and Mr. Norton are the teachers who direct the whole project. It is a two-week long process where they learn about investment instruments that could help them be successful in their future, all of which includes Stocks, Bonds, Mutual Funds, etc. They purchase and sell items, getting a hands on experience of what being a consumer on the market would be like. For example, there is one section of the project dedicated to Investopedia, a game where they buy and sell stocks as a simulation. You begin with $100,000, and you begin your investments from there. However, they can crash and you can lose everything. When asked how well they responded to the game, Rena Fox stated, "Oh, I believe I responded pretty well. I mean, now I know how to become a millionaire, but in all seriousness it was pretty fun". This helps them to learn how the stock market truly works. I surveyed a class of Seniors, and more than 80% said that it was relatively easy, even with different requirements for certain teachers. The meaning of this project is to prepare us for adulthood, that way we can invest responsibly. That is the whole goad, but will the students actually do it? A Brooke Brown was asked if she would use any of these techniques in the near future, "Yes, I feel like I will because I find it interesting, and like it's a good plan to have. I'm not a super risky person, and knowing that I'll have money packed away just in case anything happens would be a great relief to have." The project is a hefty part of the seniors grades as well. If they don't have it done, they may not graduate it is that big of an assignment. Most seemed to have benefit from it as Alex Pomozal stated, "Before, had a general idea on what saving was, and how to do it. Now, I just feel incredibly informed after this whole chapter. I know that, with what I've learned, I'll take it and use it in my adult years for future planing." This project has been a benefit to the school and it's students. Senior stock projects show Red Bluff High just completed the 2017 ASB and Class Officer Elections, electing their officers for the coming school year. These officers will be responsible for planning school events, coordinating class function, and heading the decision making for their class. Spring Break gives students time off from homework and early mornings. Spring Break has become a U.S. phenomenon and an academic tradition. Spring Break began in the late 1930's and has now moved on to western countries. Spring Break tends to be more popular in universities. Spring Break has various names including, Easter Holiday, Easter vacation, March break, spring vacation, Mid-Term Break, study week, reading week, reading period, or Easter Week. As Students here at Red Bluff High prepare for their Spring Break, they have several ideas of how they will spend it. Sophomore Stephanie Mills says she will be spending her break at the FFA State Conference, which will take place in Fresno, CA. At the conference, FFA students attend leadership conferences and wrap-up the stay with a Brett Young concert. Mills looks forward to leaving Red Bluff for a while and getting to interact with FFA students from different places. Senior, Taylor Nguyen, said she would be spending her break going on hiking adventures and hosting movie marathons with some of her close friends. Nguyen explained that her and her friends were going to re-watch some of their favorite childhood movies and find some new places to hike to. Freshman Aaron Rodriguez said he would be spending time with his family. Rodriguez thinks Spring Break is a perfect time to hang out with friends and family and just relax. For any adventurers looking for new places to explore this break, some places to visit are, Feather Falls, Burney Falls, Crystal Creek Falls, Whiskeytown Falls, Beatson Falls, Shingle Falls, Paradise Flumes , and Phantom Falls. my most memorable years here at Red Bluff High." Lisa Somavia, the Student Government advisor has similar views when compared to her student saying, "I see a lot of energy and creativity with the new officers that were elected. It will be exciting to see how they will use their skills next year to benefit their class." Regardless of the obstacles that are to come, the ASB and Class officers aren't afraid to work hard to create a memorable year for Red Bluff High.
