52 BOSTONCOMMON-MAGAZINE.COM PHOTOGRAPHY BY SARAH WINCHESTER TURN IT ON! BOSTON-BASED INTERIOR DESIGNER AND BLOGGER ERIN GATES CONTINUES TO EXPAND HER HOMEGOODS COLLECTION—AND IS CRUSHING IT. BY KELLY ANDERSON Talk about popular. Erin Gates: interior designer, book author, blogger, and entrepreneur is known to command the attention of 57,000 Instagram fans, 33,000 followers on Twitter, as well as a solid presence on the New York Times best-sellers list. Now, she's created an exclusive home lighting collection as part of her "Elements" home goods line. So Erin, how do we light up our lives? Where do you find your inspira- tion for your lighting fixtures? "I find inspo in pottery, patterns, and colors that are trending in fabric and furniture—they translate to lighting as well." How can we use lighting to kick-start a new spring look? "Push out any lighting that you don't love. And then I'd say make sure you have lighting at all different levels in your home. If you have both overhead lighting and table lamps, you have a choice about what kind of ambience you want to set." What are the elements of style? After all, your mantra is "live life beautifully"… "My favorite spaces are ones that really tell a story about who lives there. My least favorite kinds of spaces are ones that look like hotel rooms, or like you're too scared to sit down anywhere. Style is super personal and I always love spaces that reflect individuality."
