He was 74. Ellis retired at the end of 2012 after a career that spanned several decades and saw him sell more than 2 mil- lion newspapers. His trips around Downtown Evansville likely added up to more than 150,000 miles, requiring a new pair of Red Wing shoes nearly every six months. Ellis was a mainstay in the Downtown area, shuffling along the streets in his cov- eralls pushing his newspaper cart daily, also selling copies at the Civic Center and other businesses. Former newspaper employ- ee Terry Grimes said in a past Courier & Press article published in 2000 that he's never seen anyone quite like Ellis. In the early 1960s, Grimes helped Ellis get the job. "I realized Bobby couldn't carry a (regular) route, but back in those days, we had street sellers--kids selling papers on street corners. We just started Bobby off doing that. We'd give him 10 papers and tell him to come back for more when he sold those. He developed his own route." Following Ellis' retire- ment, Evansville Mayor Lloyd Winnecke proclaimed Feb. 28, 2013 as "Bobby Ellis Day" in the city. - Evansville Courier & Press Bobby Ellis leaves the Civic Center around 7:30 a.m. after delivering papers to many of the employees who work there. Generally, the budget bill isn't finalized until the end of the session when a con- ference committee version is finalized between repre- sentatives of the House and Senate. In addition to Sen. Kenley, House Ways and Means Chairman Tim Brown, R-Crawfordsville, will be a key figure in that discussion. Speaker of the House Brian Bosma, R-Indianapolis; and Senate President Pro Tempore David Long, R-Fort Wayne, also will provide leadership in any language included in the budget bill. HSPA has reached out to Rep. Brown and Rep. Bosma and will also raise its concern to Sens. Long and Kenley. Bosma's chief-of-staff, Lesley Crane, met with Key and said leadership will dis- cuss the issue. "From my conversation with Lesley Crane, I'm posi- tive there isn't any intent to create a bad situation," Key said. "The intent was to encour- age ideas that are outside of the box, and spur creativity in how government and pri- vate entities can better serve Hoosiers." HSPA believes total secrecy will open the door for abuse. Budget Continued from Page 1
