The 2017 Lady Spartan Red Bluff High School Jv softball team started their season this past weekend at the Pleasant Valley High School tournament. The team was really stoked because one of the team goals is that they want to beat Pleasant Valley every time they play them, and they have done it once so far. The boys have high expectations for this season, and they hope to obtain a section ring after winning sections. They think they are a well set up team and they are working hard toward getting many wins this season. Many of the players on the team have been playing together since they were younger and have also grown together as players while playing travel baseball. There are not many new Sarah Herrera Staff Writer Varsity boys baseball comes onto field faces due to the fact that they all know each other. "It's definitely a plus knowing your team's strengths and weaknesses beforehand," explained Senior Wesley Clawson. AJ Poni added, " We are all good together, and we gel as a team." The boys have long time experience since many of them have been playing since they were four or five years old. "I have been playing for fourteen years now and I think that is part of why I am so in love with the game. The boys currently hold a 2 wins 0 losses record in pre-season play. The team strengths are hitting and defense. While they lack communication on the field, they feel that it is something "I am looking forward to all the memories..." -Taylor McKerras and watching the girls come together as a team and building friendships and trust that will last long after high school. "This is going to be a great year and I'm looking forward to many great memories with an even greater group of girls, I can't wait to see what the rest of the season has in store for us," said sophomore, Sydney Sinclair. The girls have been putting in lots of work, time and effort these past few weeks in hopes for a great pay off. "We are decent at communicating on the field, but overall we play really good together," added Junior, Tanner Tweedt. As well as team goals the boys have also set individual goals. " I plan on being able to bat above 300, and help my team get to the section finals," said Coates. They are quick learners and are always open to opinions and criticisms. The boys will travel to Oroville this weekend to play in their tournament. "This is a tough tournament but I know we definitely have it under the bag. We have the talent and everything it takes to potentially bring the trophy home," explained Wesley Clawson. The 2016-2017 Red Bluff high school varsity golf team have been chipping down their competitors one by one. They have been competing at a noticeably competitive level throughout the year. Senior Nathan Fregoso has been playing golf since he was five years old and is planning on playing during his attendance at college. His team goal for this season is to qualify and compete in divisions, sections, masters and states. Fregoso's lowest score for eighteen holes is sixty-nine strokes; his personal goal for the season is "To make all league, and take first place in the states tournament." Winning is Fregoso's favorite part about playing golf, and why he prefers to play with the school golf team instead of golfing by himself. Dawson Hopper is a sophomore and is participating in his second year as a Red Bluff golfer. Hopper is hoping to make it to sections this season. His personal goal for the season is to make it to masters and to compete. The lowest score that Hopper has ever shot on eighteen holes is an eighty- three. The reason why Dawson Hopper likes playing with the high school team instead of by himself is that it is "More fun to play with a group or with my team, and playing as a team gives you a goal to beat your teammates." Their next match is next Thursday at Bidwell park at one o'clock. Coach: Javier Vazquez Record: 8-10 (as of printing) The Varsity Girls Soccer team just ended the season a couple weeks ago with an amazing 8-10 record. Sophomore Claire Miller re- sponding to the question how the season was overall said, "As the season progressed, we became closer as a team. In the beginning of the season, it was a little awkward because I was one of the three underclassmen but soon was embraced by the upperclassmen and was wel- comed to the team." Responding to the question what was the best part of the season, Claire Miller said, "The best part was making to one of playoff games but sadly we lost for the first game due to a de- meanor on our game." As the season grew to an end, many of the players grew to become a friendly team and can not wait till the season comes again next year. Wrestling Coach: Ty Minto Record: 8-2 (as of printing) The Varsity Wrestling team just wrapped up a very successful season that brought tremendous amounts of growth and improvement for individuals and the team as a whole. Following a memorable weekend at Masters with eight wrestlers bringing home medals and placing sixth overall as a team with 124.5 team points, Red Bluff advanced one wrestler to compete at the State Championships held in Bakersfield on March 3rd and 4th. The wrestling team is pleased with how they performed this season, agreeing that although they had trouble peaking at the same time they were able to all wrestle well at Masters. As the team says farewell to many seniors, they are optimistic about the upcoming season and hope to continue at the level of talent they have. VB Bball Coach: Pablo Vazquez Record: 8-17 (as of printing) The Varsity Boys Basketball team just ended their season about a week ago with a decent record of 8-17. Senior Evan Tanner respond- ing to the question how the sea- son was overall said, "It was fun for how unsuccessful it was. I wish we could have won more games and played better but the cards just didn't fall in our fa- vor." Responding to the question what was the best part of the season, Evan Tanner said, "The best part was arcata and all the memories we made there. The highlights of the season were rarely made on the court, but they were with the time spent with all the teammates and the coaches." As the season grew to an end, the team had grew closer and all them cherish the memories they had made with each other and can't wait till next year.
