Serving Red Bluff High School since 1901 Volume CXVIII Issue 10 The Great Wall, page 4 Bluffer The March 10, 2017 Kayla Moore Guest Writer Varsity Girls Softball, page 6 Seniors succeed in changing contract In a past issue, the Bluffer published a story discussing what the new 2017 Senior Contract entailed as well as the fact that some seniors protested against the contract, asking for change. The seniors leading the protest, Kayla Moore, Rylee DuFrain, Kenzie Colgate, Gabriel Fregoso and Abby O'Sullivan have succeeded in modifying some of the requirements in the senior portfolio. Mr. Ackley said, "It's been nice to see that students care about their experience as they finish high school and it's been nice to see that adults are willing to listen and support them." The students and administration were able to come to a compromise regarding the issue. Officially in regards to the portfolio, all pieces are still intact, except for number four, the community service reflective essay, and five, the business/community interview. The senior contract has also been revised to instead of zero Lexi Pritchard Editor-in-Chief unexcused a b s e n c e s , students can now have three unverified absences. Furthermore, if seniors don't have their 20 hours of community service done, they can choose to participate in Senior Make a Difference to make up for that. However, if all community service requirements are met, all there's left to complete are the exit interviews. An email has been sent out to all seniors in order to schedule their interviews, and an expectations rubric with the questions to be asked during the interview has also been handed out to students. 1. Reflective Essay New seNior Portfolio Interview F FA is the largest organization here at Red Bluff High School with over 400 members and counting. Agriculture is a driving force within our school district and community. Future Farmers of America was officially established in 1928 in Kansas City, Missouri when thirty-three young students from eighteen different states gathered to establish an organization that offered originally just boys "a greater opportunity for self-expression and for the development of leadership. In this way they will develop confidence in their own ability and pride in the fact that they are farm boys." Corn gold and National blue became the official colors of FFA in 1929. In 1969 girls were finally allowed to hold official FFA memberships and the rest is history. In honor of such a wonderful organization RBHS celebrates National FFA Week every year from February 27th to March 5th. When asked about the topic of National FFA week chapter, officer Reed Pritchard said, "National FFA Week is designated to commemorate FFA traditions, ideas, and qualities." He continued with, "During this week we participate in events to raise awareness and the enthusiasm level for our chapter." Students are encouraged to dress up correlating with a theme every day as well as take part in lunchtime activities. Dress up days and LTA's included Monday: America Day and Pie and Officer, Tuesday: Flannel Day and Egg Roulette, Wednesday: Workout Day and Inch Worm Races, Thursday: Beach Day and Volley Ball, and Friday: -ER Day and Hot Dog Feed. They also distributed bags of popcorn to all of the RBHS teachers and staff during the week. Activities and dress up days are used to raise awareness and interest in FFA as well as create fun for students. Volley Ball and the free Hot Dog Feed were huge hits with students. As well as interactive LTA's and dress up days here at our school Red Bluff FFA also went out into our community to raise awareness. Over a hundred students got together with signs saying things such as, "Honk if you love FFA" and "We love FFA." The group walked together through town to Firehouse where they got free pizza and then to Lariat Bowl to bowl According to Mr. Ackley, "Information will continue to come out as the process gets polished." To participate in Senior Make a Difference, seniors need to sign up for it in their Economics class. From there, all projects must be approved by Mr. Norton, Mr. Ackley or Mr. Cleary. All five students would like to thank everyone, both students and teachers who supported them in their cause. They also encourage their peers to participate in Senior Make a Difference since they worked really hard to bring the tradition back. And finally from the dean of students and Mr. Ackley, "Now students, go get it done."
