Page 7 February 17, 2017 Sports Varsity girls basketball continues The Red Bluff High School Varsity Girls basketball team, continues to shoot for a great season. The Spartans 3-6 in league, and 13-8 overall, have played to their full potential and have had a well played season so far. The team is led by captains and Seniors Megan Boone, Allyson Drury and Lexi Pritchard. Their starting lineup consists of Jesse Miller, Maggie Winning, Karissa Twitchell, Kylee Kitchell, and Allyson Drury. Coach Shelby Long is proud of her team and their efforts. "They put in hard work at every practice, and it is obviously paying off during game time," added Coach Long. This is Glines' first season on Varsity and she feels like it has been one of the best experiences ever to be able to play at such a high intensity level of basketball. Sophomore, Jesse Miller, explained "This is my second year on Varsity and right away, the girls have taken me under their wing and I always feel at home with this team. They make Sarah Herrera Staff Writer The Red Bluff High School 2016-2017 Varsity boys soccer team is going into the final stretch of their exceptional season. With only a few games left, the boys have a record of nine wins, seven losses and two ties. Montoya's personal goal is to make it to the all-star game. The all-star game is at the end of the season; it is only for the best s e n i o r s in the l e a g u e . H e c l a i m e d that the t ou g he st t e a m they have played is Pleasant Valley. "In the first half against P.V, we were up 2-0; however, in the second half, we just shut down." They ended up losing that game. One of the four freshman on the team, Mikael Ago, has been playing soccer ever since he was a baby; however, he has been playing on teams for eight years. He is one of the several mid- fielders on the team, and he wants to get to the final game in the playoffs. When asked what their team needs to improve on, he stated, "Finishing the chances that we have when going in for a shot." One of the team's major forwards is Alex Alvarez. After highschool, Alvarez wants to go play for Butte college; he loves soccer because it is always different and challenging. A l e x Mendoza s t a t e d that he has been p l a y i n g s o c c e r s i n c e he was four, and that his farthest goal scored was forty five yards in seventh grade. He is a defender. "Our team can't leave big gaps in the field, but we have really good ball control," said Mendoza. The Varsity Boys next soccer game will be February 21 at High Speed in the NSCIF semi finals. This year's 2016-2017 Red Bluff High School's Freshman Boys Basketball team came to the end of their season on February 17 playing Pleasant Valley High School. This year, the team started off roughly losing a few of their first few games but within very few points. They all persevered and continued to work hard in games and dedicated much needed time to their team. Connor Sousa, a senior on the team states, "The team is doing really well, and with each race we're getting better." This shows that the team is accomplishing their main goal, which was growing to become more fundamentally sound when it comes to alpine practices and as better athletes all together. In girls snowboarding Ellie Miller, a junior on the Red Bluff High Alpine Team, took home ninth place. In boys snowboarding, Terrin Garcia took home a sixteenth place in a field of challenging competitors. In girls skiing, Mariah Damante received a sixth place finish and Trinity Tumidanski brought back a ninth place finish. In boys skiing, Connor Sousa came out on top with a first place finish, followed by Devon Treat who finished in sixth. The team is finishing up their season shortly and their main focus is to finish strong. They are just mere weeks from the CNISSF State Championships, which many of the team members are looking forward to, so they will continue to work hard in the coming weeks. team focused on playing as a one and becoming better. A handful of the team members agreed that their best game was against Enterprise High School on January 17 because they fought through the whole game and never gave up. They also agreed they had exceptional teamwork. Not only did they play great throughout the whole game but it also ended with a buzzer beater shot for the win. The team became very close over the season and had a lot of many amazing memories. Freshman Eli Webhey said, "My favorite memory was when we played Pleasant Valley, and it was a home game because I hit two threes in a row." Others talked about the memories at practices, van rides, and in the games. They are disappointed to see the season come to an end, but most of the team plan to continue on playing JV basketball next year. They conquered their goals for the season which was to always work hard and never give up. With there only being three Seniors on the team, the captains feel like they take on a big responsibility as being role models for the rest of their teammates. Allyson Drury also added, "I have loved being a captain to this team. We have become much like a family and the energy the girls give off makes it even better." The girls hope to keep up a winning streak and hopefully make it into the playoffs, possibly as far as bringing home the section title. The section title is at the top of the team's list of expectations this season. They know they have what it takes as a team and each individual brings their own perks, making the team unique. Aurora Carnes (11) "It was a great comeback by the Patriots and great to watch." Connor Sousa (12) "There wasn't anything good about it, I lost my extra credit." Amanda Elshenawy (9) "It was okay because I wasn't rooting for a specific team." Shea Gleason (10) "It was stupid because I lost extra credit when the Falcons choked."
