PHOTOGRAHPY BY MICHAEL BLANCHARD (SLATTERY, LANIEWSKI); MATTHEW WEST (ROGOWSKI); MARC DELEY (ENGLISH) FROM THE EDITOR-IN-CHIEF Todd English with his daughter Isabelle and sons Simon and Oliver at the reopening of Olives. As we were putting together this orgeous new coffee table book, The Little Black Jacket: Chanel's Classic issue, I received a copy of Chanel's g With Mad Men's John Slattery on the red carpet of our cover party at Smith & Wollensky. Revisited, featuring portraits of famous style setters—male and female— in Karl Lagerfeld's beloved black tweed jacket. Whether its deconstructed, buttoned up, worn backwards over frilly white, or layered with rockstar leather, each wearer makes it his or her own. This book gets right to the heart of fashion—while a designer may show an item one way, a true style setter doesn't hesitate to reimagine the look. For this fashion issue, we imposed our own modern vision on Edith Wharton's The Age of Innocence, shooting a feature at The Mount, the mansion Wharton designed for herself, which remains one of New England's grandest architectural treasures. On the premises of the estate, we could easily imagine romantic trysts and rendezvous in wooded glens and secret corners of the gardens. We were shooting our story on one of the hottest days of the year, so any hint of sultriness detected on the page is truly legitimate. Speaking of sultry, this summer heated up fast, starting with our John Slattery cover party at Smith & Wollensky on the Waterfront, where it was 98 degrees! Great to see Channel 7's Hank Phillippi Ryan there, on the cusp of the release of her new thriller, The Other Woman, as well as the whole Slattery clan. Our summer lawn party on Nantucket was the best yet, with so many of our readers attending and enjoying the Facebook.com/boston-common and on Follow me on Facebook at bostoncommon-magazine.com. We were thrilled to have chef Ken Oringer there as well as Bill Belichick, Linda Holliday, and Bianca de la Garza. In July we joined with Peter and Elizabeth Georgantas of PEG Properties & Design of Boston for a fun demolition party as they began the work of constructing the Chevron on Tremont, a fabulous new building of luxury Parisian-style flats in the South End. We'll salute the last days of summer at the same time as we anticipate the buzz of fall with our Newport glam bake at the end of August. See you there! JANICE O'LEARY 32 BOSTONCOMMON-MAGAZINE.COM
