"They're going to take over the back office, all of the management and all the payroll," said VCOC Executive Director Brenda Peterson. The Nonprofit Center already operates the Volunteer Center of Milwaukee, which provides services similar to those of the VCOC, including volunteer matching, nonprofit training, holiday programs and other services. The staff of that volunteer center will now be manning the VCOC as well. "The staff here will be extending their reach," said Robert Meiksins, CEO of Nonprofit Center of Milwaukee. The changes mean that current VCOC staff positions will disappear. Peterson's last day is March 1; she has been with the VCOC for more than a decade. "My heart and soul went into it," she said. Peterson said that this decision has been under discussion by the Volunteer Center's board of directors. The change was not shared publicly until after the final votes of the board. That board will continue overseeing the VCOC, with an additional member from the Nonprofit Center, according to Peterson. "This is huge … we've been trying to find the best way to keep serving (Ozaukee County) with the resources available," Peterson said. VCOC has operated as an independent nonprofit; with recent losses in annual funding, the VCOC had to either come up with new sources of sustainable funding or a new mode of operation. While a fundraiser in October met its $10,000 goal, the VCOC did not find a continual funding source to replace a loss of $30,000 annually that used to come from the United Way of Greater Milwaukee. The VCOC partners with more than 70 nonprofit agencies and organizations, matching them with volunteers in the Ozaukee community.
