The tradition continues this year with a Broadway favorite and a star-studded cast. "Hairspray Live" airs Wednesday, Dec. 7, on NBC. It was really only a matter of time before "Hairspray" saw an- other incarnation. The wig-filled, alliteration-heavy story of integra- tion and going for your dreams has enjoyed much success on screen and stage. Set in 1962 Baltimore, the story follows "pleasantly plump" teenager Tracy Turnblad as she realizes her dream of dancing on "The Corny Collins Show." The long-running Broadway produc- tion debuted in 2002, and is based on the 1988 film written and di- rected by the king of the pencil mustache, John Waters ("Polyes- ter," 1981). The musical won eight Tony Awards, including Best Musi- cal, and ran for more than 2,500 performances. The Broadway show was adapt- ed for another run on the big screen in 2007, with a cast packed with A-listers including John Tra- volta ("Grease," 1978), Michelle Pfeiffer ("What Lies Beneath," 2000), Christopher Walken ("Catch Me If You Can," 2002) and Queen Latifah ("Living Single"). NBC's production also features star pow- er, but true to "Hairspray" form, the lead role of Tracy Turnblad is played by a relative unknown. Newcomer Maddie Baillio beat out more than 1,000 other Tracy hope- fuls in an open audition. Luckily, the fledgling starlet has a strong team surrounding her. Ca- nadian funnyman Martin Short ("SCTV") plays her father, Wilbur, and Harvey Fierstein ("Indepen- dence Day," 1996) reprises his Tony-winning Broadway role as Tracy's indomitable mother, Edna — but that's not his only role in the special. The gravel-voiced actor penned the teleplay for the special, just as he did last year for "The Wiz Live!" Two-time Grammy nominee Ari- ana Grande ("Victorious") plays Tracy's best friend, Penny Pingle- ton, and Disney darlings Garrett Clayton ("Teen Beach Movie," 2013) and Dove Cameron ("Liv and Maddie") play teen heart- throb Link Larkin and resident brat Amber Von Tussle, respectively. Os- car winner Jennifer Hudson ("Dreamgirls," 2006) steps into the role of Motormouth Maybelle, dancer Derek Hough ("Dancing With the Stars") plays Corny Col- lins, and Tony winner Kristin Che- noweth plays scheming villainess Velma Von Tussle.
