Shop Washington County • Washington County Post • December 4, 2016• A3 By Mary Jones …It haunts many of us in December…You know what I'm talking about. It's a week before Christmas and in the back of your mind you keep think- ing…I don't know what to give my spouse, mom, dad, friend, co-worker, etc. for Christmas. Choosing the "right" thing can be challenging, and while easy, a gift card can seem impersonal. However, there is a way to combine them with a thoughtful gift, which is sure to please that hard-to- shop-for person. But where do you start? Here are some ideas that incorporate a gift certificate/card, with a personal touch, that makes the impossible gift, possible! Barbeque Master: Get your grill on… Purchase a large grilling mitt and fill with barbecue tools, and an apron. Add a personal touch by including a contain- er of homemade barbeque rub. Brown Sugar Rub for Pork or Beef 1 T. brown sugar 1 T. salt 1 T. paprika 1 T. chili powder 1 T. black pepper (You could also add a pinch of cayenne for heat, and/or cumin for additional smoky flavor). Mix ingredients together and place in a clean spice jar or small metal container (available at craft stores), and add a festive label. Place the container with the rub in the mitt, and include a gift certificate to a local meat market, like Ries' Sausage Plus. Need a grill? Stop at Tennies Ace Hardware for the latest models. This is a gift that's sure to inspire the recipient to "fire up the grill!" Book Worm: "There are many little ways to enlarge your world. Love of books is the best of all." – Jacqueline Kennedy Books are gifts that keep on giving! If the recipient has a hobby or a favorite sports team, this becomes an appreciated gift. Purchase the first book in a series, and then include a gift certificate. That way the reader can purchase the second book when they've finished the first. Add a personal touch by using simple materials to make a bookmark. Button Bookmark Paperclips in a variety of sizes and colors. Buttons in a variety of sizes, shapes and colors. Hot glue gun and glue sticks (glue can be hot – read instructions for use before using hot glue gun) Felt Hot glue a button to the top of a paperclip. Then cut a piece of felt and use a small amount of hot glue to cover the back of the button with the felt (part of the paper- clip will also be covered). This will seal the glue and leave a nice smooth finish. In place of buttons, you could use coins, plastic jewels, foam flowers, ribbon, small pompons, etc. Chef: Perfect for the person who enjoys concocting delicious dishes… Purchase an oven mitt and fill with kitchen utensils (spatulas, turners, spoons, whisks, measuring spoons, ladles, tongs, etc.). Other items could be holiday kitchen towels, scented hand soap, jars of spices and herbs, or flavored oils or vinegars. A hand-written recipe makes the gift personal, especially if you include one of the ingredients (non-perishable if the gift will be shipped or not opened immediate- ly). Include a gift card to an area grocery store, and it's sure to please the chef extraordinaire. Fashion-Minded: Dazzling and classy are two of many looks that come to mind for the fashion inspired. A small purse becomes the perfect container to hold a new wallet, fancy pens, a phone case and a small umbrella. Include a gift card to a favorite clothing store to make this ensemble complete. Photographer Extraordinaire: A picture says a thousand words… A photo of the two of you becomes special when placed in a one-of-a-kind frame. Start with a plain frame and embellish with shells, buttons, coins, paint, beads, or ribbons, jewels, etc. The possibilities are endless. For your photographer's special photo, a gift certificate for custom framing from Slesar Glass is a thoughtful way for the shutterbug to display their art. Green Thumb Gardener: A great gift for those who like to "dig in the dirt"… Purchase a planting pot and fill with gardening gloves, and small gardening tools. Include a few packets of seeds, gardener's soap and lotion, plus a gift certificate to a local garden nursery. Wrap the pot in burlap, tie with a festive bow, and include a sprig of holly or other greenery for a pop of color. Movie Buff: Enjoy movie night at home… A red and white striped popcorn container is the perfect vehicle for holding favorite theater treats. Fill with microwave popcorn, the recip- ients favorite boxed candies and a cher- ished or classic holiday movie to watch one snowy evening. Include a gift certificate from the West Bend Cinema, so your movie buff can see the newest release on the big screen. Sparkles Galore: "She's so hard to shop for"… She's a great wife/mother, and a beauti- ful piece of jewelry is one way to show her how much you care. Purchase a styl- ish pair of earrings…then include a gift card for something custom designed. Maus Jewelers and Schalla Jewelers in West Bend are locally owned, and can create a one-of- a-kind piece that highlights the unique things you love about her. ✦ Fine Jewelry ✦ Custom Design ✦ Goldsmithing ✦ Giftware ✦ Watch Batteries ✦ Engraving 235 South Main Street West Bend, WI 53095 262 ✦ 334 ✦ 2131 Two-Stone Fashion Jewelry TENNIES TENNIES HARDWARE HARDWARE Hardware… since 1957 # 1 SELLING ITEM The Perfect Holiday Gift!
