The recent announcement of a $2 million grant earmarked for improvements to Sherman Park has been ballyhooed as one in a series of overtures toward breath- ing new life into an area that was rioted in and looted in mid-August after a Milwaukee police officer shot and killed resident Sylville Smith. Martha Brown, deputy com- missioner with the Milwaukee Department of City Development, said the grant is from a state agency, the Wisconsin Department of Financial Institutions, and is earmarked specifically toward neighborhood rehabilitation. "This grant is being provided as part of the state of Wisconsin's response to unrest in Sherman Park," Brown said. "(It) will subsi- dize the demolition and rehabili- tation of residential properties." Although specific details will become known as the grant dol- lars are applied, Brown said she estimates that grant dollars will pave the way to raze about 100 dilapidated homes within the neighborhood, which is loosely bound by West Capitol Drive, West Lloyd Street, North 60th Street and North 20th Street. Additional funds within the scope of the grant also will be ear- marked toward rehabilitating other homes within the neighbor- hood. The city is partnering with nonprofit organizations and on a lease-to-own program for first- time homebuyers. Three aldermen living at or near Sherman Park's boundaries formally sponsored the legislation needed to accept the grant dollars at the Common Council level. Michael Murphy, Khalif Rainey and Russell Stamper II were the sponsors.
