JOHN DUGAN Writer ELAINE GLUSAC Writer Chicago-based freelancer Elaine Glusac writes about travel and food for The New York Times, Conde Nast Traveler, Afar, and Departures, among others. Behind the Story: "I learned chefs are crazy creative when it comes to brunch ["Power Brunch," page 60]. I couldn't believe the whacked-out, souped- up dishes on offer. And it's the fun kind of experimen- tation. Anyone can relate to red velvet French toast." Fave brunch spot: "Longman & Eagle in Logan Square, because the menu is super-savory (try the sunny-side duck egg hash), and it feels like a continuation of Saturday night." Winter in Chicago: "I'm the rare winter lover. I love the transformation of the landscape under snow. Everything's softer and brighter, at least compared to a snowless winter. We flood an ice rink in our Chicago-small yard, and as a result my edging turns are improving." …WITHOUT WHOM THIS ISSUE WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN POSSIBLE The former online editor at Time Out Chicago and founding editor of Pitchfork's Nothing Major, John Dugan is a regular contributor to the culture blog of The Economist and design publications like Mohawk Maker Quarterly. Dugan also recently edited indie press Curbside Splendor's book The Empty Bottle Chicago: 21+ Years of Music/Friendly/Dancing, featuring hundreds of interviews, essays and photographs of the Ukrainian Village rock club's history. Behind the Story: "In the course of chatting with Justin ["Music Man," page 70], we realized that we're both crazy for the music of '70s mods The Jam and Memphis cult pop legends Big Star." On my playlist: "I've been getting into The Equals, Eddy Grant's band from the '60s; they jump from innocuous to political from single to single. [Also], within minutes of streaming Justin's Greatest Hits on the way to school, my kids became instantly obsessed."
