What started out as a casual pastime—posting the occa- sional photo from my adventures out and about in Chicago and wherever else my travels take me—has recently progressed into a full-blown obses- sion: Fastidiously composing each shot; agonizing over filter choice (Clarendon or Juno?!?); researching optimal hashtag usage; and poring over the millions of photos being posted 24 hours a day by 'grammers around the world. I'm certainly not alone. From Instagram and Twitter to Snapchat and that old stalwart Facebook, social media has revolutionized the way we interact with the rest of the world, giving us a voice to share our opinions and our perspective with everyone on the planet. And those who have mastered the game—rack- ing up tens of thousands or even millions of followers—are society's new celebs, wielding serious influ- ence and a powerful platform. To paraphrase the old slogan, when they post, people listen. In this, our Winter issue, we shine the spotlight on these new Chicago celebrities, some of the biggest movers and shakers in the city's social media scene. From foodie force Samantha Roby (@chicago- foodauthority) to Style Charade fashionista Jenn Lake (@jenniferlake) and architecture whiz Neal Kumar @nealkumar), these Windy City residents and Instagram stars give us the scoop on their inspirations, their favorite Chicago spots to shoot, and the secrets to their success.
