"Until 1976, there was no place in the United States you [could] buy cosmetics outside of a department store or drugstore," says Lily Garfield. That's when a light bulb went off in her head. "I said to myself, I know how to do this." After spending several years working for Love Cosmetics at Bloomingdale's in Manhattan, Garfield moved to Aspen and, with less than $5,000, opened town's beloved Cos Bar. Today, the luxe retail cosmetics chain boasts 14 stores across the country, including one in New York's new Brookfield Place, and more growth is forthcoming. "There are a lot of untapped markets we're looking at," says Garfield, who plans on opening 35 more locations in the next five years, including in LA's tony Brentwood nabe. But the self-described skincare maven says her best sellers in Aspen are still the classics: "Sunscreen or moisturizer—whatever it takes to protect and hydrate your skin at 8,000 feet above sea level." After a day on the slopes, Garfield suggests applying a mask, like FlashPatch Eye Gels from Patchology or Orlane's new Crème Royale Sublime Mask, to rehydrate the skin.
