"Some of the great art collectors in the world are right here, in Aspen," says Albert Sanford, president and owner of Galerie Maximillian. "What I do is find a treasure, and then find a good home for it." He's had ample opportu- nity in the two decades since opening up his fine prints gallery, which specializes in "museum-quality works on paper." But Galerie Max, as it's known, is more than a niche—it's an investment: "We own 95 percent of what we sell," says Sanford, 56, of the gallery's atypical practice of buying its inventory as opposed to working off of consignment. Now, the gallery—which Sanford opened with his wife, Dorothy Wildman, after moving to Aspen from Chicago in the spring of '97—will honor its time in town with something of a retrospective. "Then and Now: Modern, Postwar, and Contemporary Prints" will encompass more than 50 pieces of the gallery's 20th and 21st century works on paper. The modern component will place focus on Joan Miró and include pieces that have never before been on the market. Prints from the likes of Cy Twombly, Donald Judd, and Ed Ruscha fill out the postwar period. The final movement will feature the work of Anish Kapoor, Christopher Le Brun, and other British contemporary artists, a group "where we sort of hang our hat," says Sanford. There, yes—and here.
