PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF DOUGLAS ELLIMAN Hall of the mountain king: The refined-rustic aesthetic of the fortress-like Elk Mountain Lodge, as exemplified in its towering Great Room, is the quintessence of western mountain-style architecture and décor in the Roaring Fork Valley. THE LODGE LIFE AN 82-ACRE MARVEL HITS THE MARKET IN THE CASTLE CREEK VALLEY. BY CHRISTINE BENEDETTI A homestead-turned-dude ranch-turned-coal baron's dream house, Elk Mountain Lodge embodies 110 years of Wild West history. And now the vast 82-acre, 12-building property, located at 125 Rooney Circle in the pristine Castle Creek Valley, is ready for its next chapter: Its owner, billionaire energy magnate William Koch, has placed it on the market for $80 million. The 14,987-square- foot, eight-bedroom main lodge served as a venue for weddings and other events from the mid-'80s until 2007, when Koch pur- chased the property. But after extensively renovating the buildings—his additions include a 2,200-square-foot temperature-controlled wine cellar and a media room that also functions as a hyperbaric chamber—he is ready to sell off his ties to the Aspen area, and Douglas Elliman brokers Joshua Saslove, Raifie Bass, and Wendy Wogan (970-925-8810; elliman .com) are helping him do it.
