Before shrugging your shoul- ders and thinking that's what most young men do, understand that Nader is a small-business owner. Nader owns Barkin' Up Hickory, a doggy day care facility in Pewaukee. Last November, in the pages of this publication, the words devot- ed to Nader described his passion for pups — how he returned to the area from California, scouted loca- tions and opened his business about four years ago. The article chronicled how Barkin' Up Hickory was enjoying tremendous growth, and how Nader was preparing to move into an adjoining space and expand his footprint. What happened in one year in the life of a small business? For Nader, it can be characterized as a year of addition and growth, on many fronts, tinged with occasion- al moments of heartbreak. Room to grow Nader purchased his building, at 1271 Hickory St. in Pewaukee, late in 2015. Earlier this year he expanded into a second building behind Barkin' Up Hickory and connected the two via fenced cor- ridor. The expansion is changing the vibe of the business. Nader said there is no longer a pack of dogs waiting in one area at the two times of day he interacts personal- ly with his customers — morning drop-off and afternoon pickup. "In late April or early May we finally got up and running (in the new space), and it's been awe- some," Nader said. "It's been everything that I expected." Nader said the expansion pro- vided a welcome ripple effect. Barkin' Up Hickory could take more dogs, which is a plus. Nader said Barkin' Up Hickory previous- ly hosted 40 dogs in one space, and now welcomes 50 to 60 dogs per day in his two spaces. And more dogs meant Nader needed more staff. "It forced me to hire more peo- ple and just kind of let go of dogs all the time, and look at a manag- er's role and owner's role," Nader said. "Instead of being there over 80 hours a week, now I'm there somewhere in the 60-hour range. "I don't even know what to do with myself." One of Nader's employees went to grooming school and is now cer- tified, so Nader is able to offer another service to his customers. Nader said the next step is build- ing a better grooming space and expanding that portion of the business. Nader said surrounding himself with good people makes expansion — both physically and in hiring more staff — easier. "I thought it was going to be more stressful, having more staff and having more dogs," Nader said. "It's been the opposite. The people who work for me have real- ly stepped it up." Not all change is for the best. It is to Nader's credit that Barkin' Up Hickory enjoys a robust cus- tomer base that is always growing. More people means more dogs, but more dogs can also bring some sor- row. "The worst thing about it, espe- cially in the last year, we've had 10 or 12 dogs that died," Nader said. "There was a period of two weeks early in the summer when five dogs died." The dogs passed on at home or in the veterinarian's with their own- ers after becoming loyal patrons of Barkin' Up Hickory. Nader's been around long enough to build a business to the point where per- sonal loss on the part of his cus- tomers pulls at his heart. "Those are our friends," Nader said. "We get attached to them, and you feel so bad for the owners. A lot of times, it's a long time com- ing. They know it's just around the corner. "Other times, they went to the vet because their dog wasn't feel- ing well, and two days later, they're gone. It's always heart- wrenching." Submitted photo Expansion has meant more dogs can be accommodated at Barkin' Up Hickory, where owner Ben Nader set up shop a few years ago in Pewaukee.
