NOVEMBER 2016 Jilly's not your average car wash By Chris Bennett Special to The Freeman One does not step into the shower, splash soap on their face and body and spin around under the water until the pre- vious day's dirt and grime is washed free. There is a ritual to showering, whether one takes 30 seconds or 10 minutes. Soap is applied, the body is washed — hopefully, with care — and every- thing is rinsed, all in an effort to feel clean and human. Jon Zimmer man applied the same set of ideas to the car wash industry, and washes automobiles in the same fashion most of us wash ourselves. Zimmerman owns two car washes. There is a Jilly's Car Wash at 15340 W. Bluemound Road in Elm Grove and another Jilly's Car Wash at 1293 Capitol Drive in Pewaukee. The washes are named for his wife, Jill. Zimmerman has like- ly spent more time thinking about the act of washing a car than anyone you know, and chooses his words on the subject in a manner similar to how a painter might choose a brush before embarking on a would-be masterpiece. "I always felt, for some reason, through doing some research, that in this particular market in Wisconsin, is seemed as if people in the car wash business were very good at all looking alike," Zimmer- man said. "It would be a market I could tap into, if I moved into the mar- ket and did things dif- ferently." Differently comes in a host of forms at the two Jilly's locations. Zim- merman strives to add a human element to the act of washing a machine. "I always wanted cars to be greeted by a per- son," Zimmerman said. "You're greeted. We give every person who goes through a car wash scent and a free dash wipe, and we give the kids a lollipop and a dog a treat." Depending on the wash package, the tires are cleaned before the car enters the wash. The car is hand- scrubbed with a brush and spray gun a bit before it enters the con- veyor.
