Though Bun- ker Hill Hospital is fictional, the ultra-modern, state-of- the-art institution serves as the setting for CBS's newest medical drama. Starring English actor Au- gustus Prew ("The Borgias") and the handsome Dermot Mulroney ("My Best Friend's Wedding," 1997), "Pure Genius" premieres Thursday, Oct. 27, on CBS. The new series hails from writer and producer Jason Katims, well- known for his critically acclaimed, heartstring-tugging family fare such as "Parenthood," "About a Boy" and "Friday Night Lights." "Pure Genius" is a bit of a change of pace for Katims, but it's one that stems from personal experi- ence. "I come from a personal place in my writing and ... my wife and my dad both got very ill," he said at the Television Critics Associa- tion press tour this summer. "I spent a year in hospitals, back and forth as a supporter of them and advocate for them. What I found [was that it] renewed my admiration for doctors and their commitment to what they do, and I was frustrated by the system that they were working in. I yearned for a hospital like Bunker Hill where the best idea wins, ev- eryone is talking to each other and things don't fall through the cracks." Bunker Hill is a very special hos- pital. Not only was it founded by a tech titan, James Bell (Prew), but because of Bell's immeasurable wealth, it features some of the world's most brilliant minds and is outfitted with cutting-edge tech- nology not yet available to the av- erage Joe — as Bell mentions in the show's official trailer count- less times while trying to recruit Dr. Walter Wallace (Mulroney), a talented surgeon with a contro- versial past. For Katims, the idea behind Bunker Hill is to meld two very dis- tinct worlds that are not often as- sociated with each other, despite the fact that the medical world and the tech world often go hand- in-hand in real life. "I tried to imagine what [a hos- pital like Bunker Hill] would look like, and that led to the idea of merging worlds of medicine and technology. And not just gadgetry, but also the philosophical ap- proach to solving problems," Ka- tims said at the TCA press tour.
