Calla tubers can be harvested when the foliage starts to yellow or directly after the first frost, whichever comes first. Remove foliage, and carefully dig tubers, allowing them to cure for a couple of days in direct sunlight. Note the difference here in curing; it's in direct sun and not shade. Also, pack them in peat moss. There is another difference — you need to store them in a warmer location. They need to be stored in a location that is around 50 to 60 degrees F. An unheated basement, or root cellar, works great. In spring, it is best to start these indoors and plant outside after weather warms and all threats of frost have passed. Now that you have a better understanding on how some of these need to be over-win- tered, I hope you'll think of reintroducing them into your landscape. I'm also pretty confident that over time you'll accumulate so many that you'll have to share them with your neighbors, and that's what gardening is all about — sharing the beauty of nature with those around us. (Mike Timm is a horticulturalist for Ebert's Greenhouse Village in Ixonia.) Some fast facts can provide answers to this age-old consideration. Here are three compelling reasons to think fireplace. ■ A gas fireplace will add between $2,950 and $5,900 to a home's value, according to the "Marshall & Swift Residential Cost Handbook. ■ New homebuyers rank fireplaces as the No. 1 most desired decorative appear- ance product in a new home, according to the National Association of Home Builders. ■ Today, homeowners have an opportu- nity to differentiate their homes with a fireplace in different ways. Both tradition- al and modern fireplaces are now offered with innovative technologies that push the boundaries of where fire can go and how it can look. Consider brands that designers, architects, builders, and remodelers trust, such as Heat & Glo. More information about how a fireplace can improve home value and differentiate spaces is available at www.heatnglo.com. Dutch Gardens Don't let thoughts of spring trump the careful preparation needed in autumn. StatePoint Besides a variety of styles and warmth, a fireplace can add value to a home, making sense for those staying or selling their home.
