"Hi this is Gary Blaschke, or Rocky, whichever you prefer. I'm probably out playing someplace or riding my bike or doing something fun. Sorry I missed your call, please leave your name and number and I will get back to you as soon as possible. Hope you're having as much fun as I am." Gary "Rocky" Blaschke's answering machine exemplifies exactly the kind of person the 71-year-old Milwaukee Lutheran and Carthage College graduate is. He's out playing softball, pickleball, or riding bikes with his wife, Joan, for eight to 10 hours a day. His Fitbit usually reads 15,000 to 20,000 steps by the time the sun descends. So, his answering machine is right; if you call Blaschke, he will be out of his house doing something. "That's what happens when people call me all the time," Blaschke said. Blaschke was inducted into the Milwaukee Lutheran inaugural Ath- letic Hall of Fame on Aug 26. He's also a member of the Land o' Lakes Hall of Fame and Carthage Col- lege Hall of Fame. "The good Lord has been good to me," he said. "When you're young and playing all these sports the thought doesn't even come to your mind. When it happens it's a pretty big honor to be selected." He coached softball, freshman football, fresh- man girls basketball and freshman boys volleyball at Brookfield East for a total of 37 years. He coached 91 different teams, only taking a cou- ple years off coaching three sports. Today, Blaschke is on a softball team that com- petes at the Wisconsin Olympics and in national tournaments in Las Vegas where they've won the title three times. He plays tennis and pickle ball with his wife, and rides a bike whenever given the chance. He has a silver medal from the Senior Olympics and really enjoys the atmosphere of all the sports, especially softball. "Everyone is pretty decent. They're good play- ers or else they wouldn't be on the traveling team," Blaschke said. "I love to compete. I have the com- petitive edge. I give it my all whenever I do anything and I just try to go out there and have fun and do the best I can. "I feel being 71 that I can still compete, so why don't I do it." Blaschke and his wife, Joan, met on the sidelines of a Carthage College foot- ball game during his senior year. Joan, a fresh- man at the time, was a cheerleader and Blaschke had just been injured. "He was on the sideline with a hurt knee his senior year at Carthage," she said. "And he just had a little surgery, so he had time to look around other- wise he would've been on the field." Blaschke excelled as a football, basketball and baseball player during his time at Milwaukee Luther- an, including three confer- ence titles his senior year. He is now in three halls of fame and his wife couldn't be more proud of him. "He just does it because he loves it all," Joan Blaschke said. "Rocky has a wonderful mindset that he can do anything. You just have to go for it and do as much as you can because you don't know how much longer you're going to be able to do it." Rocky is currently a game manager at Brook- field East basketball games and volunteers to help out with softball whenever he and his wife are back from their house in Estero, Fla.
