(OK, may- be not always, but at least for a very, very long time.) And for good measure. "Grey's Anatomy," "Scandal" and "How to Get Away With Murder" are critically ac- claimed masterpieces that draw big viewership numbers and plenty of accolades — each show has at least one Emmy, as well as count- less other awards. But wait? What's this? "Scan- dal" is conspicuously absent this fall. Don't fret, though! Kerry Washington ("Ray," 2004), as Oliv- ia Pope, will be back midseason — the show went on hiatus during the actress's pregnancy, delaying production and release ever so slightly. Until then, Thursday night viewers can dine on "Notorious" in the vacated time-slot, with a new episode of the freshman se- ries airing Thursday, Sept. 29, on ABC. No, "Notorious" is not a Shon- daLand show, but it still has a ShondaLand-esque flavor to it. The series stars Piper Perabo ("Covert Affairs") and Daniel Sunjata, whom you may recognize from a handful of season 7 and 8 episodes of "Grey's Anatomy," as TV show producer Julia George and defense attorney Jake Gregorian, respec- tively. The two main characters are based on real-life people — long- time "Larry King Live" producer Wendy Walker and lawyer Mark Geragos — and is inspired by their relationship: him a master manipu- lator of the media, and her a driv- ing force behind what does and doesn't make it to people's living rooms. And while it may seem like a one-sided relationship where the hot-shot lawyer pulls all the strings, it actually goes both ways. "Mark is a master manipulator of the press," Walker, who serves as an executive producer for "No- torious," said at the Television Crit- ics Association press tour last month. "Nobody does it better than he does. He really used me and our show to get sympathy for Scott [Peterson, convicted of mur- dering his pregnant wife]. I used him and owned that story because of my relationship with Mark, and he owned my show. We didn't do anything wrong or lose CNN integ- rity, but it was a relationship that really worked well for us." It's tricky ground to walk on in real life, but in the fictional realm of television, it makes for a sexy, scin- tillating hour of television that seems perfect sandwiched be- tween the two ShondaLand shows.
