The city of Milwaukee has set in motion a plan that kicks off early voting Monday at three loca- tions across the community. Shorewood is giving its residents the opportunity to begin casting ballots in a few weeks, starting Monday, Oct. 10. A month ago, U.S. District Judge James D. Peterson struck down portions of Wisconsin's voter ID law, enacted in 2011, in addition to other elections-related laws. In his ruling, Peterson said he believed the Republican-con- trolled Legislature created the laws to suppress voting by minori- ties, a constituency that tradition- ally leans in favor of Democrats. But Neil Albrecht, who heads up the city of Milwaukee's Election Commission, said the ruling has greater implications and believes people of all party affiliations will benefit. "I think what's important about this ruling is the autonomy it gives municipalities," Albrecht said. "There's no right or wrong way to develop a (vot- ing) schedule. But it needs to meet the needs of the residents." Based on its sheer size, Albrecht said he believes the city of Milwaukee should have extended its early voting window to ensure residents across the community have ample opportunity to vote. The city of Milwaukee's over- tures are a significant increase from past practice. In prior elec- tions, the city offered 110 hours at one location: the Zeidler Municipal Building, 841 N. Broadway. With a large turnout planned for the presidential election, Albrecht said the city is pulling out all of the stops by offering a total of 725 hours of early in-per- son voting opportunities.
