Results reflect first time all seniors took test By LAUREN ANDERSON Conley News Service WAUKESHA — Wisconsin's average ACT exam score dipped below the national average in the first year that all graduat- ing seniors took the test. Wisconsin's average 20.5 score is below the national average of 20.8. The state score is down 1.7 points from last year, when 73 per- cent of seniors took the exam. The results aren't entire- ly unexpected, as school officials had prepared to see a decline in scores fol- lowing a 2015 state mandate that all juniors take the exam. The state's 2016 score is fourth highest among the 18 states where all gradu- ates were tested and 11th highest among states where more than half of students took it. Among all states, Wisconsin ranked 29th. The college-prep test is designed to measure stu- dents in English, math, reading and science, and includes an optional writ- ing component. Many col- leges use ACT scores as an admission requirement and scores are often used by organizations to award scholarships. The highest attainable score is 36. Wisconsin's test scores had been among the high- est, and above the national average. Last year, the state was tied with Iowa for the sec- ond- highest composite ACT score (22.2) among states where more than half of students take the exam, while Minnesota held its firstplace spot with a score of 22.7. But now with 100 per- cent participation among students, the results were s o m e w h a t predictable."You could expect a big drop when that happens," Waukesha School District Superintendent Todd Gray said. "It's not a surprise. Most states don't have 100 percent of their kids taking it like we do." 2 • Milwaukee County Post • August 26, 2016 State ACT scores drop below national average Volume 22, issue number 34 The Milwaukee Post (ISSN 1544-1776) is published weekly by Conley Media, Milwaukee County 3397 South Howell Ave., Milwaukee, WI 53207 For all departments call: 414-744-6370 News display and advertising FAX: 414-375-7070 Classifieds: 800-762-6219 ext. 5005 Classified Fax: 262-334-6252 For display advertising inquires: 414-744-6370 Barry Richards: Advertising Representative — ext. 13 brichards@conleynet.com Julia LeGath: Advertising Representative — ext. 17 jlegath@conleynet.com Jim Baumgart Advertising Sales Director — 262-513-2621 jbaumgart@conleynet.com For editorial questions: Dan Muckelbauer Editor 262-513-2626 dmuck@conleynet.com POSTMASTER: Send address changes to the Milwaukee Post 3397 S.
