Demolition crews are begin- ning to remove the rubble of destroyed buildings. And Mayor Tom Barrett has loosened nighttime curfew restrictions. The immediate shock and awe associated with the riots and other violent behavior near Sherman Park has passed. Officials representing Milwaukee and the rest of the county are now weighing in on potential remedies of the root causes that led to the events that unfolded in the overnight hours of Aug. 13 and Aug. 14. Reflecting residents' senti- ments, leaders across the county have gone on record and shared a range of opinions in the days fol- lowing the unrest. Eight business- es in the area were destroyed or damaged, and numerous police officers and bystanders sustained injuries. The Milwaukee Common Council was looking at ways of addressing the violence epidemic before Sherman Park was thrust into the national spotlight. City officials held a series of meetings throughout the first half of the summer. This week, President Ashanti Hamilton and other members of the council delivered a public safe- ty action plan that touches on 23 recommendations, ranging from hiring more police officers to revisiting the oft-criticized vehi- cle pursuit policy.
