By Dan Muckelbauer HomesPlus Editor Whether building new, remodeling or just freshening up, the annual Metropoli- tan Builders Association's Parade of Homes can stoke ideas. Some of the ideas for the taking range from drop zones to updated farm style and function. From lighting to antique brass to the latest trim stains and wall colors, ideas can be found everywhere in the 20 homes at two new Waukesha County subdivi- sions from Saturday through Sept. 5. Dropping in If you decide to tour the homes, keep an eye out for variations of the drop zone. Be it in the laundry, kitchen or another room, it's a design trend aimed at conven- ience and organization that's on full dis- play at this year's Parade of Homes. Whether you build new or remodel, the materials can fit your style and budget. Drop spots can be for backpacks, shoes, jackets and even technology. "They're kind of multiple nooks," said Paul Bielinski of Bielinski Homes, which has a Parade model at Weyerhaven Subdivision in Menomonee Falls and another at Windrush in Hartland. In Bielinski's two-story Verona model with finished lower level totaling 3,800 square feet, a drop zone for kids features a wooden bench landing for taking off shoes but also storage. Maple cabinetry in the French manor-style home at Win- drush can be customized to any color or material, Bielinski said. Wall hooks in a locker style await almost anything. A custom bench can stash anything. "It's to keep the kids organized, and it's not easy to keep them organized," Bielin- ski said. "In the kitchen, there is another drop- off zone. You can put a computer in there and keep an eye on the kids. It's an exten- sion of the countertop and cabinetry. In this case it's all granite counters and maple cabinets, but it can be any surface," Bielinski said of the designated C O N T E N T S Farmers markets provide more than food, they can supply an education Window film can create the right amount of light, heat Know your fixtures to get lighting right in the kitchen A publication of the Waukesha Freeman and Oconomowoc Enterprise • AUGUST 2016 Your Guide to Homes, Home Improvement, Lawn & Garden and MORE!
