After taking fourth place in shot put June 3, Perez stepped up and delivered in his very first throw of the discus com- petition June 4 during the Division 1 WIAA Track and Field State Championships at Veterans Memorial Stadium. Perez, the eighth seed in discus, heaved a throw of 172 feet, 3 inches — a personal record by over seven feet — with his first toss of the finals to take home first-place hon- ors in the event. "Whenever I throw, it's always my first three that are usually my best," Perez said. "So I knew if I relaxed and my first turn was nice and slow, I could attack the middle and get a nice, good throw." Brookfield East senior Cameron Allen-Aylsworth took fifth in the event (162-2), while Waukesha North senior Justice Graf had a 155-foot throw to take eighth. Arrow- head junior Dylan Richman was 17th (141 feet), Mukwona- go junior Alec Benzinger took 18th and Muskego junior Jorin Mcguire came in 19th. "I was pretty nervous," Perez said. "I was going against other really, really good guys and I've thrown with them last year, so I was pretty nervous. But on my first throw — which was the 172 — I knew I had to stay relaxed in order to make a big throw. So I took deep breaths, relaxed myself and that's the one where I knew I had to let it rip in order to place." Perez's state championship added 10 points to the Lasers' boys team total, which put them into a tie with Brook- field East through 16 events scored. Kettle Moraine went on to tie Middleton for the second- place trophy (41 points), giv- ing it runner-up honors in its best state meet since winning a team title in 2008. The Lasers were helped along to the silver trophy in field events, an area they gained 33 team points from. Kettle Moraine junior Jared Jones took second in the pole vault (15 feet), with Hamilton senior Zach Jasins- ki tying for third with Hud- son senior Dylan Anderson (14-6). Senior TJ Lui took third in the triple jump (45- 2.75) to push the Lasers toward the top of the team standings. "We crushed it today," Lui said. "Julio and Dan (Graf) in shot (Friday), Jared getting second in pole vault, we had a crazy good day in events and I couldn't be happier for my team." Lui had his longest jump occur on his last attempt, which was something he said helped to ensure it was a solid one. "I was trying to psych myself up and get the final push and get that jump in," Lui said. "I was thinking to myself, 'This is the final jump of my high school career.' It's pretty crazy; it's pretty unre- al." On the track, junior Ben Psicihulis took home a bronze medal after placing third in the 400 (48.36), an event that was won by Ash- waubenon sophomore Jose Guzman (47.53). "I'm just happy to be on the podium. That's really what I wanted," Psicihulis said. "I came out of the blocks stronger than I usually do, that's normally been the weakness of my race. Then around the 200 mark, that's when the guys who took first and second started to pass me. I just wanted to keep up with them and run a good race." Kettle Moraine's 4x400- relay team of sophomore Jack Chard, junior Conner Lilly, senior Isaac Scott and Psicihulis placed seventh (3:20.88).
