By Chris Bennett Special to The Freeman HARTLAND — Nick Miller left his position as a low-voltage electrician on June 2 of this year. On June 3 he missed a putt in a local golf outing, and missed out on a $5,000 prize. On June 6, Miller and his wife, Elise, took a leap of faith many small-business owners understand. They started offering open hours at Lake Country Bed Barn, 122 Cottonwood Ave., Suite 2, in Hartland. LCBB, a wholesale mat- tress store previously open only by appointment, is now open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday. "We consider it to be very successful," Nick Miller said. "More than we could have imagined at this point, after only two and a half years." The Millers went into business when Elise decid- ed she did not want to return to a full-time work setting run by someone else after the birth of their first daughter, Quinn, who is now 2 1⁄2. The Millers added recently added another daughter to their young family — Mira is 6 months old. Ben Nader is another young entrepreneur who decided Lake Country is the perfect place to start a busi- ness. Nader is the owner of Barkin' Up Hickory, a doggy day care and boarding facil- ity at 1271 Hickory St. in Pewaukee. Like the Millers', Nader's business grew. He reached the point where expansion became a necessity. Nader purchased his building late last year and expanded into a second building behind Barkin' Up Hickory, con- necting the two via fenced corridor. The expansion is chang- ing the vibe of the business. Nader said there is no longer a pack of dogs wait- ing in one area at the two times of day he interacts personally with his cus- tomers — morning drop-off and afternoon pickup. "It's working really well," Nader said. "I really wanted to have it done by spring break. It's frustrating when you're turning people away for spring break." Both the Millers and Nader located their busi- ness and their lives in Lake Country. Both live in Hart- land. Nader originally intended to locate farther east, and is now in his fifth year in Pewaukee. "I had originally found a spot in Brookfield that I liked, but Brookfield wasn't willing to let me have my business there," Nader said. "They were putting up a lot of roadblocks and weren't going to let me have kennels and doggy day care, like I wanted." Nick Miller freely admits he and Elise would not be selling factory-direct Sym- bol Mattresses, built in Watertown, if not for the assistance and generosity of the Hartland business com- munity. LCBB first located near Generations Dental on Capi- tol Drive in Hartland, and then moved to a location in Capitol Plaza. Due to a sale of the facility, the Millers learned shortly after mov- ing in — before even hosting a grand opening event — they would need to move. Add one more hoop to the mix: Three days before mov- ing into their current loca- tion, the Millers got flooded. Why do we live here?
