By Karen Pilarski Freeman Staff PEWAUKEE — A soft-spo- ken woman sits poised in a crisp pair of jeans in her Pewaukee home. You might not guess it, but the petite blonde is mom to three buff athletes; J.J. Watt, 27, Derek Watt, 23, and T.J. Watt, 21. J.J. Watt is a defensive end for the NFL's Houston Texans, Derek Watt, a full- back, was recently drafted to the league by the San Diego Chargers and T.J. Watt is a tight end for the Badgers' football team at the University of Wiscon- sin-Madison. Derek Watt walks past his mom with a sandwich on a plate. When asked if he wanted to be in a picture, he shakes his head no. "This is all about her," Derek Watt said. Connie Watt is more than a mom. She is a business woman, philanthropist and beloved community mem- ber. She is vice president of the J.J. Watt Foundation, which provides funding for after-school athletic pro- grams to middle schools that need it. The goal is to provide a safe place for mid- dle school students to play. To date the foundation has donated over $1.8 million. J.J. Watt left a message for The Freeman about his mom. "She is literally the most incredible person I know. She is mentor, manager and mother," said J.J. Raising big boys Connie and John Watt have been married for 29 years and adore Pewaukee for its small-town appeal. In a small area like Pewaukee, the kids tend to grow up together, which takes away the intimidation factor of starting at a new school. "I've always said it takes a village to raise a family. This is a great place where everyone is connected," Connie Watt said. When the Watt boys were young their dad worked as a firefighter and their mom worked part-time for a building inspection compa- ny. The Watt boys were raised to help with chores and it was not unheard of to be assigned a book report during the muggy summer months. "Our traditions included spending time together and eating meals as a family," she said. Another tradition was spelling out words in M&M candy for birthdays and holidays, which she still does. Connie Watt is thankful for having a flexible employer as she was able to stay home in the morning. It was important to her to have a hot breakfast on the table for the boys and see them before they went to school. She relied on the support of her husband, neighbors and friends, who took care of the kids while she worked. "That is the great part about Pewaukee, the kids were always well taken care of," she said. J.J. Watt said he appreci- ates his mom for making meals, washing off gear and driving the brothers to practice. He said his mom takes care of everyone and deserves credit every day. Happy Mother's Day Mother's Day is special because the kids are all together at one time.
